Coral Gables, Fla. – On Saturday afternoon, University of Miami women’s tennis coach Paige Yaroshuk-Tews announced the release of the 2009 spring schedule highlighted by the Hurricanes hosting the ITA National Indoor Qualifier.
After posting a 17-6 overall record and making an appearance in the “Sweet 16” of the 2008 NCAA Tournament, eighth-year head coach Yaroshuk-Tews has assembled quite possibly one of her strongest teams in recent history at UM. And with that strong team comes even stronger and higher expectations with the addition of a very competitive schedule in 2009.
The Hurricanes will host 13 matches this year at the beautifully renovated Neil Schiff Tennis Center, in addition to playing host to the ITA National Indoor Qualifier on Jan. 30 and Feb. 1. UM welcomes fellow competitors from the University of Tennessee, University of Virginia and University of Utah in the event.
“Hosting the Indoor Qualifier is something we wanted in its first year,” stated Yaroshuk-Tews who has coached seven All-America performers at UM in now her eighth season at the helm of the Hurricanes program. “It’s a much better way of seeing who the top teams in the country are in January. Making each team earn a spot into the Indoors [championships] rather than simply being given one based on their last season results is a move in the right direction. We’re excited to have this event in Coral Gables.”
Miami will spend the first four matches at home as they kickoff the year against four Sunshine State opponents, beginning with Atlantic Sun Conference newcomer Florida Gulf Coast on Jan. 23 and concluding with Conference USA member UCF. That stretch of home contests includes hosting the Indoor Qualifier where the Hurricanes will have the chance to qualify and proceed on to Madison, Wisconsin where they would compete in the National Team Indoor Championships on Feb. 12-15.
In late February, UM will travel out to Texas for a “Lone Star State” shootout with perennial powers TCU and Baylor on Feb. 21 and 22. They come back to Coral Gables on Feb. 26 to host Michigan before playing host to their first Atlantic Coast Conference (ACC) matchup with Boston College (Mar. 5).
Matchups on the road with Georgia Tech (Mar. 7) and Clemson (Mar. 8) follow those home meetings before UM comes back home for five consecutive matches that begins with ACC foe and in-state rival Florida State (Mar. 11). Also headlining the list through those home dates are Arkansas (Mar. 18) and Duke (Mar. 22).
Senior Day for the `Canes is set for Apr. 5 against Wake Forest, followed by their regular season finale against Maryland on Apr. 10 in College Park, Md.
The ACC Championships are slated for Apr. 16-19 in Cary, North Carolina, while the opening rounds of the NCAA Tournament (First/Second round) are to begin on May 8 and run through May 10 at campus sites to be determined around the nation.
“Strength of schedule throughout the year pays real dividends at the end of the post season,” stated Yaroshuk-Tews. “Our schedule will keep us on our toes from the beginning to the end.”
After reaching the “Sweet 16” of last year’s NCAA Tournament and posting an overall record of 17-6, Miami returns four letterwinners from that team which includes two-time All-American Laura Vallverdu. Also included in that list are Michaela Kissell and Bianca Eichkorn who both collected individual-best performances in the fall for the Hurricanes. They also welcome the arrival of four newcomers, including University of Florida transfer Julia Cohen.
