Men's Tennis Falls in Semifinals of Seminole Invitational

Tallahassee, Fla. – The University of Miami men’s tennis team saw its strong run come to a close in the semifinals of the Seminole Invitational at Florida State on Sunday.
Carl Sundberg knocked off three-straight opponents – including host FSU’s second-seeded Clint Bowles, 6-7 (5), 6-3, 6-2, on Sunday to advance to the semifinals of singles play. The sophomore snapped his win streak with a 6-0, 6-2 loss to Florida’s Carlos Cueto in the semifinals.
Sundberg then turned his focus to doubles play. Pairing with Hector Nieto, the duo had cruised past Georgia Southern’s Gregory Bekkers and Edio Contanhel in Saturday’s Round of 16 to move on to Sunday’s competition. On Sunday, the tandem knocked off East Tennessee State’s Matej Zlatcovic and Jason Ramski, 8-5, to earn a spot in the semifinals.
Keith Crowley and Igancio Taboada also advanced to Sunday’s semifinals after Saturday’s opening-round 8-4 win over Florida A&M’s Michael Moore and Marc Atkinson and Sunday’s Round of 8 victory over UAB’s Brian Ly and Alex Emery.
But with an opportunity for both of Miami’s doubles pairings to meeting in Monday’s finals, both Hurricane duos dropped their semifinal matches on Sunday evening. Sundberg and Nieto fell to Auburn’s Lukas Marsoun and Alexander Stamchev, 8-4, while Crowley and Taboada lost to Louisville’s 26th-ranked duo of Simon Childs and Austen Childs, 8-2.
The University of Miami men’s tennis team closes fall competition at this weekend’s ITA National Indoor Championships beginning Thurs., Nov. 6, in Charlottesville, Va. Third-ranked Daniel Vallverdu will be competing in the prestigious tournament for the Hurricanes.
