Hurricane Swimmers/Divers Split Meet against Duke, Campbell

Durham, N.C. – The University of Miami swimming & diving team came away with another tri-meet split on Saturday, defeating Campbell (W, 179-54) and falling to ACC opponent Duke (L, 104-129) at the Taishoff Aquatics Center in Durham, North Carolina.

The Hurricanes (4-3) posted 25 top-five times/scores on Saturday to collect their second-highest total of the year in any meet.

The 200 medley relay team kicked things off right off the bat with a third place showing after registering a finishing time of 1:49.56. They were led by the leadoff swimming of Katie Eason (27.83) while the anchor was provided by freshman Hagar Elgendy (24.80). Things progressed into the 1000 yard freestyle as Ryann Labreche posted a mark of 10:35.91 to finish third for the event. Behind her was teammate Tiffany Petzold (10:48.41) who finished fourth.

Sophomore Annika Saarnak picked up the first win of the day for the Orange and Green as she recorded a time of 1:52.32 in the 200 yard freestyle. Lauren Jacoby (1:57.44), Sarah Lozier (2:02.06) and Meredith Hatic (2:04.02) all placed for the `Canes as well.

Lizzi Torres and Elgendy went second and fourth, respectively, in the 50 yard free. Torres scored a time of 23.87, while Elgendy picked up a time of 25.26. Senior Britta Boesing was second for the `Canes in the 200 IM as the Germany native had a time of 2:05.54. Aiding UM in the event also was Deidre Novotny who placed fifth (2:11.54). Boesing also finished in third place in the 200 backstroke as she collected a mark of 2:08.36.

In the diving competition, senior Jenna Dreyer scored a first place total of 315.90 in the 1-meter event. Freshman Kelci Bryant was third (283.43) and Brittany Viola finished in an unusual seventh place spot scoring 204.58. In the 3-meter event, Viola bounced back in dramatic form to finish atop the pack with a winning total score of 318.15. Behind her in second place was Bryant (290.93).

Saarnak continued her winning ways for the `Canes in the 100 freestyle posting a time of 51.54–leading second place finisher Kirstie Jeffrey of Duke by almost two seconds. Torres was third in the event with a time of 53.72.

Jacoby and Labreche teamed up for a fourth and fifth place finish in the 500 free, as Jacoby had a time of 5:06.85. Labreche touched the wall at 5:09.56.

Boesing’s best event, the 200 breaststroke, proved to be just that when she picked up a winning time of 2:21.26, while Dana Hatic finished behind her in second place with a mark of 2:22.68. Katie Eason (2:29.55) and Sagette Van Embden (2:33.68) were in fourth and fifth, respectively, for Miami.

UM capped off the day with a first place time in the 400 freestyle relay as they registered a season second-best time of 3:33.14. Saarnak (51.80) started off leadoff, and Jacoby (52.59) finished it off for the `Canes as the anchor.

The `Canes return to the water on Saturday, Nov. 8 when they host Florida Atlantic University at the Norman A Whitten Student Union Pool at 11 a.m. Admission to the event is free.
