Vallverdu Falls in ITA Southeast Regional Champs Semifinals
Oct. 20, 2008
Lexington, Ky. – Top-seeded Daniel Vallverdu of the University of Miami men’s tennis team snapped a three-match win streak to fall in Monday’s semifinals at the ITA Southeast Regional Championships at the University of Kentucky.
Vallverdu, the nation’s third-ranked singles player, fell to Georgia’s third-seeded and 12th-ranked Nate Schnugg on Monday morning in three sets, 6-2, 4-6, 6-3, to end his Regional run.
However, with his advancement to the semifinals, Vallverdu has already qualified for the prestigious National Indoor Championships to be held in Charlottesville, Va., from Nov. 6-9.
Schnugg, who won the ITA Southeast Regional doubles title on Sunday with Jamie Hunt, advances to this afternoon’s singles finals to face host Kentucky’s fourth-seeded Bruno Agostinelli. Agostinelli advanced after defeating third-seeded John-Patrick Smith of Tennessee, 6-2, 7-5, earlier today.
The Hurricanes, who have competed on 15 out of the 20 days in October, have a short respite before returning to the court at the Seminole Invitational from Nov. 1-3 in Tallahassee.
