Cross Country Completes Final Regular Season Meet

BOONE, N.C. – The University of Miami cross country teams traveled to Appalachian State University to take part in the Covered Bridge Open, where both the men and women ran to top-20 finishes. Senior Andrew Chuplis led the men and freshman Anna Bona did the same for the women.

Finishing 18th as a team with 449 points, the women were led by Bona for the second time on the season, with the first coming at the Florida Runners Invitational on Oct. 4. Bona finished with a time of 19:42 on the 5K course. The Schereville, Ind. native has finished in the top-two within the team in all six events this season.

Finishing second for the women, in her final regular season meet as a collegiate runner was senior Ena Leufroy, who crossed the line at 19:51. The third finisher for the Hurricanes was Emma Steppe, the sophomore transfer from Michigan, with a time of 20:00. Freshman Page Price came in fourth at 20:13. Rounding out the final three were Katharine Woodard (20:39), Kalea Aguon (20:46) and Caitlin Knapp (21:40) respectively.

Meg Gaffney of Appalachian State was the first collegiate runner to cross the line at 17:58. The team title went to Clemson who had a total of 74 points

Chuplis was the first Miami runner to cross the line on the 8K course for the men, with a time of 26:59, topping his previous season-best time by 16 seconds. Senior Ryan Woodlee was the second finisher for the men, when he crossed the finish line at 27:34.

Seniors Vincent Giambanco (27:39), Tim Harris (27:41) and Eric Miller (27:47) finished third through fifth, while freshman Michael Viklund and senior Jules Rosen finished at 27:56 and 28:20 respectively.

As a team the men finished 19th with a total of 533 points. The team champion was ACC foe North Carolina, scoring 43 points. The individual champion hailing from Queens University was Michael Crouch (24.19).

Both the men’s and women’s teams will return to action on Saturday, Nov. 1, when they take part in the ACC Championships in Chapel Hill, N.C.
