A Pair of Hurricanes Advance at All-American Championships

Tulsa, Okla. – Fifth-seeded sophomore Keith Crowley and eighth-seeded freshman Ignacio Taboada of the University of Miami men’s tennis team used a pair of wins today to advance to Sunday’s final round of the pre-qualifying stage of the D’Novo/ITA Men’s All-American Championships in Tulsa, Okla.
Fifth-seeded sophomore Keith Crowley (4-1) knocked off both opponents on Saturday in straight sets, cruising past Denver’s Andrew Landwerlen, 6-2, 6-1, in the second round and then defeated Ball State’s Jose Perdomo, 6-4, 6-1, in the third round.
Crowley will face Arizona’s Ravid Hazi on Sunday with a berth to the qualifying round of the All-American Championships on the line. The 16 winners on Sunday will advance to the qualifying round, which begins on Monday.
Taboada(4-1) also advances to Sunday’s final after a pair of straight-sets wins today. He defeated UT-Arlington’s David Subirats, 6-3, 6-3, in the second round and then downed Marquette’s Dusan Medan, 7-5, 6-4, in the third round.
On Sunday, the Miami freshman will take on Arkansas’ Chris Nott.
“Keith and Ignacio both did very well today,” said third-year assistant coach C.J. Weber. “They both displayed solid mental toughness and are eager for their qualifying matches tomorrow.”
Junior J.C. Whitner (2-3) was victorious in his second-round match, winning a hard-fought 7-6 (5), 6-7 (4), 6-1 battle over UT-Arlington’s Jason Lateko. However he fell in third-round play to Oklahoma’s Ionut Beleleu, 6-3, 6-4 to close competition.
The top 16 players of the 256 competing in the pre-qualifying competition will advance to the qualifying round of the All-American Championships. Miami’s David Rosenfeld, Carl Sundberg and No. 99 David Simon have already earned entry into the qualifying round that runs from Oct. 6-8, while third-ranked Daniel Vallverdu and the nation’s top-ranked duo of Vallverdu and Sundberg have already been selected for the main draw scheduled for Oct. 9-12.
The top 16 singles players and top eight doubles teams out of the qualifying round will advance to the main draw, which will be comprised of the nation’s top 64 singles players and 32 doubles teams.
