Ann Arbor, Mich. – Sophomore Keith Crowley (Capetown, South Africa) put together a strong outing as the No. 19 University of Miami men’s tennis team resumed competition at the Wolverine Invitational at the U-M Varsity Tennis Center on the campus of the University of Michigan.

 

Crowley picked up wins in both singles and doubles play on Saturday, and with 10 points is tied for eighth place heading in the final day of competition. Junior transfer David Simon (Vienna, Austria/Louisville) continues to lead the Hurricanes with a team-high 14 points, good for fifth place after day two.

 

The 99th-ranked Simon remains undefeated in singles play at 2-0, defeating Michigan’s No. 95 Andrew Mazlin at the No. 2 position in straight sets. Simon cruised to the win 6-1, 6-2.

 

Crowley picked up his first victory of the fall season, knocking off Michigan’s Mike Sroczynski, 3-6, 7-5, 6-1, at the No. 3 spot. He then paired with senior David Rosenfeld (Coral Gables, Fla.) for the tough top-flight doubles win, 9-8 (4), over Denver’s Martin Zimmerman and Andrew Landwerlen.

 

Freshman Ignacio Taboada (Atlanta, Ga.) picked up the first win of his Miami career, using straight sets to down Michigan’s Drew Daniel, 6-3, 6-2, in the No. 4 position.

 

Juniors Hector Nieto (Key Biscayne, Fla./Coral Gables) and  J.C. Whitner (Bradenton, Fla./Pendleton) improved to 2-0 in doubles play, defeating Denver’s Benny Althaus and Johan Gunnarsson, 9-8 (4), at No. 3.

 

After two days of competition, Nieto sits in 12th place with seven points, while Taboada has five points and Rosenfeld and Whitner are tied with four points apiece.

 

Miami, No. 16 Michigan, No. 29 Notre Dame and No. 45 Denver are all competing in this weekend’s Wolverine Invitational. Points are won by individuals based on the position, with a singles win at No. 1 earning eight points, a singles win at No. 2 earning seven points, and on down with one point earned with a win at No. 8. In doubles play, an individual can earn four points with a win at No. 1 doubles, three points for each player with a win at No. 2, two points for a win at No. 3 and one point for each player for a victory at No. 4 doubles.

 

The Hurricanes close out competition at the Wolverine Invitational on Sun., Sept. 21. Miami will take on Denver in singles competition and then face Notre Dame in doubles play.
