Miami Women Win Greentree Invitational, Men Third

CORAL GABLES – The University of Miami cross country teams competed in their first event of the season as they hosted the Greentree Invitational at Tropical Park Friday evening. Sophomore Emma Steppe led the women to victory, while senior Ryan Woodlee was the top finisher for the men’s team.
Steppe was the third collegiate runner to cross the finish line and the fifth overall with a time of 20:01.67 in the women’s 5K race.
Freshman Anna Bona (20:14.86) and junior Ena Leufroy (20:21.56) finished back-to-back, in fourth and fifth place. Page Price, another freshman, crossed the line as the ninth collegiate runner with a time of 20.38.39.
Sophomore Katharine Woodard (21:18.31), sophomore Monika Freiser (21:31.28) and freshman Casey Crist (21:44.84) rounded out the top-seven finishers for the Hurricanes in their season opening win.
Florida Atlantic’s Lindsay Lucas was the first collegiate runner to cross the line at 19:11.86, while Florida International’s Daniela Espino placed second at 19:49.57.
In the four mile run, the men’s top four finishers were all seniors. Woodlee was the third collegiate runner to finish with a time of 21:26.38. Eric Miller placed sixth, crossing the line at 21:59.87. Tim Harris (22:04.40) was the third Hurricane to finish, with Andrew Chuplis three spots behind him at 22:18.02.
Freshmen Matthew Wilson and Michael Viklund made their collegiate debuts crossing the line, back-to-back at 23:08.26 and 23:13.72 respectively. Senior Jules Rosen was the seventh Miami runner to complete the race with a time of 23:33.62.
As a team, the men finished third with Florida International and Florida Atlantic taking the top-two spots. Taylor Reeves of Florida Atlantic was the top overall finisher with a time of 21:02.18, while Florida International’s Sebastian Castillo was the second collegiate to finish at 21:24.02.
The Hurricanes will travel to Orlando to take part in the UCF Invitational on Saturday, Sept. 13. The first race is set to start at 9 a.m.
