Women's Tennis Garners Three All-ACC Academic Awards

July 28, 2008

GREENSBORO, N.C. –Sophomore All-American , senior and freshman are representing the University of Miami on the 2008 All-ACC Academic Women’s Tennis Team, as announced by Commissioner John D. Swofford.

To be eligible for consideration, a student-athlete must have earned at least a 3.00 grade point average for the previous semester and maintained at least a 3.00 cumulative average during her academic career.

Vallverdu, a Psychology major, and Farah, an International Finance major, are two of six repeat honorees with both having earned the same distinction in 2007. Eichkorn, also an International Finance major, is a first-time honoree.

A two-time All-American and All-ACC performer on the court, Vallverdu won 31 matches in the No. 1 singles position for the Hurricanes this past season, becoming just the third player in program history to have recorded at least 30 singles wins in back-to-back seasons. Through her sophomore year, Vallverdu has more career singles wins (63) than any player in UM history.

In her first season at UM, Eichkorn ranked second to only Vallverdu with 29 singles wins, playing mostly in the No. 4 position. Farah finished the season 25-10 in singles play and 29-14 in doubles competition, including an NCAA Doubles Round of 16 appearance playing alongside Vallverdu.

In addition to Miami, Duke, Georgia Tech and Virginia Tech each placed three players on this year’s academic team.

Georgia Tech’s Kristi Miller and Virginia Tech’s Inga Beerman are the only two three-time honorees. Joining Vallverdu and Farah as two-time honorees are Georgia Tech’s Amanda McDowell and Clemson’s Estefania Balda Alvarez.

Last season, Farah and Vallverdu joined and on the 2007 All-ACC Academic Women’s Tennis Team.
