Kinzbach, Viola Earn Invitations to Olympic Team Selection Camp

INDIANAPOLIS, Ind. – University of Miami divers Brittany Viola and J.J. Kinzbach earned invitations to the U.S. Olympic Team’s selection camp after both finished in the top six in their respective fields in the 10-meter platform finals of the 2008 U.S. Olympic Team Diving Trials Sunday at the IU Natatorium. Viola placed fourth overall on the women’s side with an overall score of 1,046.25 while Kinzbach’s 1,285.60 points earned him a fifth-place finish on the men’s side.

 

Both divers will now head to Knoxville, Tenn., July 2-6, for the final selection camp to earn a spot on the U.S. Olympic team. David Boudia (Noblesville, Ind.) and Laura Wilkinson (Spring, Texas) earned the first two platform spots for the Beijing Games. Boudia won the men’s 10-meter title at the trials with 1642.20 points to earn his first trip to the Olympic Games, while Wilkinson clinched her third Olympic berth with 1214.50 points.

 

Viola scored between 72.00 and 76.50 on all five of her dives Sunday. She opened with finals with back-to-back scores of 72.00 before earning marks of 73.60 and 72.50 before picking up her top score of the day – 76.50 – on her final dive.

 

Kinzbach opened with dives of 67.50 and 72.00 before posting a score of 80.85 – his second-best dive of the finals – on his third dive. On his fourth dive, Kinzbach posted another solid mark of 76.50 and after a score of 65.60 on his fifth dive, he bounced back with an 85.00 on his final dive, securing his place in the top six.

 

Former UM diver Heather Bounds just missed a top-six finish, recording a seventh-place finish of 893.25 – just 6.60 points behind sixth-place finisher Mary-Beth Dunnichay –  after dives of 72.00, 72.00, 64.35, 66.30 and 76.80 Sunday.

 

Haley Ishiumatsu, Cassandra Cardinell, Jessica Livingston and Dunnichay will join Viola at the women’s selection camp while Thomas Finchum, Drew Livingston, Nick McCrory and Matthew Cooper will be competing alongside Kinzbach to earn a spot on the men’s team.
