Miami (Fla.) Head Coach Jim Morris
(opening statement):
“First of all, congratulations to Stanford. They outplayed us tonight in every part of the game. They got it done. I’m proud of this team. They have the best team record since I’ve been at Miami. They worked hard, played with a common goal to get to Omaha. They’ll always be Hurricanes.”
(on whether it felt like the players were settling in):
“I have to credit their [Stanford] pitching. We had opportunities with one or two outs and guys on base and didn’t get it in. We are an explosive club and we expect to get it done. In the eighth or ninth we had a good try to come back.”
(on whether the team was on edge after the first loss):
“We weren’t hot right at the end of the season. In the middle of the season I felt like we could beat anyone at anytime. We didn’t get it going out here. The team that gets it going, gets hot, is the team that’s going to win.”
Miami (Fla.) First Base Yonder Alonso
(about why it was so difficult to hit Stanford’s pitching):
“We were trying to do too much our there. Their guy had a good change-up. They’re great competitors.”
Miami (Fla.) Right Field Dennis Raben
(about the season and the success Miami has had):
“We did a lot of great things. Like Coach said, we have the best record at Miami, won the ACC, beat some really good teams. We had everything you need in a good ball club. We just weren’t hot out here. We just didn’t get it done. That’s baseball.”
Stanford Head Coach Mark Marquess
(opening statement):
“Obviously an elimination game was huge a huge win for us. I know we got a great pitching performance by (starting pitcher) Danny (Sandbrink). The last time he pitched was an elimination game vs. a very good Pepperdine team. The key for us was our offense. We got some big hits. Tonight we got a couple of big hits with runners on. We won the big spots tonight vs. a very good University of Miami team.”
Stanford pitcher Erik Davis
(about this being his best pitching performance of the year):
“I think this was not my best game stat wise, but team wise. Going into it I knew if we could hang with them late in the game we had a chance.”
(about tonight’s game):
“Going into the game we knew we were gonna score some runs. We wanted to do what we could to keep them in check.”
Stanford second baseman Cord Phelps
(about hit last at bat):
“Obviously I knew in the back of my mind I was a home run from the cycle. At my last at bat I was trying to get on base and keep it rolling.”
(about hitting):
“It’s been all year. Hitting is contagious. Once one guy gets going, we all hit.”
Stanford centerfielder Sean Ratliff
(about hit home run):
“He hung a split finger over the plate. He threw a first pitch for a ball. I saw it out of his hand early and could get my hands out and extended.”
