Laura Cordner Garners All-American Honor

June 10, 2008

CORAL GABLES, Fla. – A week after earning an all-regional honor, University of Miami junior rower Laura Cordner has been named to the Collegiate Rowing Coaches Association (CRCA) 2008 Division I Pocock All-American Second Team. Cordner is one of 43 student-athletes recognized on either the first or second team for their outstanding performances this season at NCAA Division I institutions. <?xml:namespace prefix=”o” ns=”urn:schemas-microsoft-com:office:office”?>

“We are all proud of Laura’s accomplishments this year,” head coach Robbie Tenenbaum said. “She is a true team player and this honor is just another indication of how important she is to our program. She makes everyone around her better with her leadership, hard work and relentless drive to succeed.”

Cordner, a native of Melbourne, Victoria, Australia, was also recently named to CRCA’s All-South Regional team. She has been a key part of UM’s 1st Varsity Eight crew that earned wins over Indiana and Eastern Michigan earlier in the spring before placing fourth at the 2008 ACC Championship in  Clemson, S.C.

At last month’s 2008 Aramark Sprints/Central and South Region Championships in Oak Ridge, Tenn., Cordner led the Varsity Eight crew to a win in the “C” championship race in a time of 6:51.200. The crew placed 13th overall in a field of 22, moving up four spots from the crew’s 17th place finish last year at the sprints.

This past season, Cordner rowed alongside teammates Shira Kharrazi (coxswain), Louise Parry (stroke), Kelly Amsler, Emily Wingrove, Sarah Medland, Bethany Krawec, Monika Sajincic and Tara Eddings (bow) in the Varsity Eight boat.

All-American athletes were selected from those already named CRCA First-Team All Region. Criteria considered for selection include: boat performance, nomination rank, coach’s comments, individual achievements, and 2k erg score. One coxswain is named to each team.

Cordner was also named to the All-ACC team earlier this season for the season straight year.
