No. 1 Miami Takes Game One from Saint Mary's, 10-6

CORAL GABLES, <?xml:namespace prefix=”st1″ ns=”urn:schemas-microsoft-com:office:smarttags”?>Fla. – Junior second baseman Jemile Weeks set a new school record with his 18th career triple and freshman lefty Chris Hernandez won for the eighth time as No. 1 Miami won its 11th straight Friday night game with a 10-6 win over St. Mary’s (Calif.) in the first of a three game nonconference series at Mark Light Field. Weeks, Yonder Alonso, Dennis Raben and Adan Severino combined to go 9-for-14 with six RBI and eight runs scored as Miami (37-5) scored at least 10 runs for the 19th time season.

                                                                                                                                                      

Alonso finished the night 2-for-2 with a home run, two RBI and three runs scored. Raben had his second three-hit performance on the season, going 3-for-5 with two RBI and two runs scored. Severino went 2-for-3 with a run and two RBI while Weeks finished 2-for-4 with two runs scored. He posted his fourth triple of the season and school record 18th career triple in the first.

 

Hernandez(8-0),in his 11th start, allowed one run on five hits while striking out three in five innings before handing it over to the bullpen to start to sixth. P.J. Fisher tossed a scoreless sixth. Alex Koronis allowed one run in two innings and Rene Guerra allowed four runs on three hits in the ninth before Kyle Bellamy came one to get the final three outs.

 

SMC starter Brian Justice (4-3) suffered the loss for the Gaels (22-20-1), allowing eight earned runs on 10 hits while walking four in five innings before Alex Jensen allowed one run over three innings in relief of Justice. Joel Staples (3-for-4), Brian Hawkins (2-for-5) and Kenny Fuglerud (2-for-3) combined for over half of SMC’s 12 hits on the night.

 

For the third straight game, UM scored multiple runs in the bottom half of the first inning. Weeks’ triple to left-center preceded Alonso’s blast to straight-away center – his team-leading 13 homer of the season – putting the Hurricanes up 2-0 after one inning.

 

With the bases loaded in the bottom of the third, Raben smacked his 10th double of the season to right, scoring Weeks from third and Alonso from second giving Miami a 4-0 lead. Ryan Jackson’s sacrifice fly to center scored Mark Sobolewski from third for the third run of the inning as Miami led 5-0, before Severino singled to right, scoring Raben. Three batters later, Severino scored from third on a bases-loaded Tekotte walk, pushing UM’s lead to 7-0.

 

The Hurricanes tacked on two more runs in the fourth. With runners on first and second, Jackson singled to left to score Alonso giving Miami a 8-0 lead. Raben later scored on a Severino sacrifice fly to right for UM’s ninth run.

 

St. Mary’s scored its first run in the fifth when Staples tripled down the line in right scored Brian Hawkins from first after he had reached on a fielder’s choice pulling the Gaels to 9-1.

 

The Gaels added another run in the eighth when Staples came home on an Anthony Aliotti sacrifice fly to left.

 

Joey Terdoslavich hit a solo home run to left center in the bottom half of the inning for UM’s final run of the contest.

 

SMC added four late runs in the top of the ninth to close the scoring at 10-6.

Game two of the three-game set with the Gaels is scheduled for 7 p.m. Saturday night. Sophomore lefty Eric Erickson (6-0, 3.32) will take the mound for UM while St. Mary’s will go with right-hander Brandon Berl (3-4, 7.02).

 

Game Notes
