<?xml:namespace prefix=”st1″ ns=”urn:schemas-microsoft-com:office:smarttags”?>GREENSBORO, N.C.– The University of Miami’s Kristy Whyte has been selected as the 2008 Atlantic Coast Conference Women’s Outdoor Track Most Valuable Performer of the Year as determined by a vote of the league’s 12 head coaches.<?xml:namespace prefix=”o” ns=”urn:schemas-microsoft-com:office:office”?>
Whyte, who hails from Pembroke Pines, Fla., was the only student-athlete to earn three overall titles at the 2008 ACC Outdoor Championships. After taking top honors and running the league’s fastest time of 2008 in the 100-meter dash, the sophomore sprinter ran a 23.48 200-meter dash to earn first-place and become the first athlete since 2003 to take the top spot in both the women’s 100 and 200. She then took part in both Miami’s 4X100 and 4X400-meter relay teams, which finished first and second, respectively.
Maybe more impressive than her three wins, was the fact that Whyte had not run in the 100-meter since the 2007 season. After informing head Coach Amy Deem that she was ready to take on a larger role for the team she was entered into the event.
The Hurricanes have taken the two top student-athlete awards in 2008 as two-time All-American Krista Simkins won the ACC Indoor Track Performer of the Year in March.
Whyte will be participating in the Penn Relays in Philadelphia, Penn. this Thursday through Saturday, April 24 – April 26.
