Hurricanes Move Into Fourth Place at ACC Championships

<?xml:namespace prefix=”st1″ ns=”urn:schemas-microsoft-com:office:smarttags”?>ATLANTA The No. 7 University of Miami women’s track and field team moved up four slots into fourth place after day two  of the Atlantic Coast Conference’s Outdoor Track and Field Championships, held on the campus of Georgia Tech at Griffin Track.<?xml:namespace prefix=”o” ns=”urn:schemas-microsoft-com:office:office”?>

 

Sophomore Kristy Whyte and freshman Tara Thomas both will run in the 100-meter final after they qualified in Friday’s preliminary heats.  Whyte won her heat in a personal record time of 11.62, she was running the 100-meters for the first time this season.  Thomas ran her collegiate-best time of 11.89, earning her finals spot.

 

Whyte wasn’t done qualifying as she grabbed a spot in the 200-meter final as well.  She ran the third-fastest time of the prelims at 23.67.  Miami’s two-time All-American Krista Simkins registered the best time of the prelims at 23.58 seconds, reaching a regional mark into a 2.2 mps headwind.

 

Simkins joined Whyte in qualifying in two events, taking the best time in the 400-meters as well at 53.58.  Freshman Tameka Jameson ran a 54.34 and will join Simkins in the finals.  Both women hit regional qualifying times in their efforts.

 

Freshman Ti’erra Brown earned a regional time for the fourth straight week in the 100-meter hurdles, and she will be the lone Hurricane representative in tomorrow’s final.

 

Brown won her heat in the 400-meters and will be joined by freshman Takecia Jameson in the finals.  Brown and Takecia Jameson both reached regional times at 57.68 and 59.00 respectively.

 

Junior Viktoria Andonova leapt 1.75m for the fifth consecutive week, earning seven points for Miami in the high jump finals, as she came in second place.  Freshman Megan Novinger reached a collegiate best 1.66m as she continues to improve her marks every week.

 

Sophomore Deandra Doyley joined Andonova in earning all-ACC honors as she finished second in the long jump with a season best 6.09m. 

 

Senior Khadija Talley earned all-conference honors for the first time in the outdoor shot put with a second place finish.  Her mark of 15.32 was the best of the season for the reigning ACC Performer of the Week.  Senior Misti Barber came in sixth place earning three points her team.

 

The 2008 ACC Outdoor Track & Field Championships will continue Saturday at 10:00 a.m. with the men’s discus.  The first of 20 championship finals on the track will begin at 1:00 p.m. with the men’s 4 X 100-meter relay.  A full recap of Friday’s events will be available Saturday morning at www.ACCSelect.com.
