<?xml:namespace prefix=”st1″ ns=”urn:schemas-microsoft-com:office:smarttags”?>ALTAMONTE SPRINGS, Fla. – University of Miami sophomore Laura Vallverdu was named to the 2008 Atlantic Coast Conference Women’s Tennis All-Conference Team for the second straight season, the league office announced Thursday.

A native of Valencia, Venezuela, Vallverdu has led the Hurricanes from the No. 1 singles position this season, compiling a record of 26-9 overall and an impressive 8-2 mark in league play. She finished the regular season as one of the more dominant players in the country, winning 13 of her last 15 matches at No. 1, including victories over No. 10 Susie Babos of Cal, No. 15 Zuzana Zemenova of Baylor and No. 5 Kristi Miller of Georgia Tech — the 2008 ACC Player of the Year — during the dual match season.

With her 6-3, 6-0 win over Maryland’s Michal Amir on April 6, she became just the sixth player in school history to win 25 singles matches in back-to-back seasons.

Vallverdu and the 11th-ranked Hurricanes will begin play at the 2008 ACC Women’s Championships in Altamonte Springs, Fla. Friday when the third-seeded Hurricanes face No. 6 seed FloridaState in second round action at 3 p.m. The Seminoles knocked off BostonCollege, 5-0, in the opening round on Thursday for the opportunity to face UM, which earned a first-round bye in the championships for the fourth straight season.<?xml:namespace prefix=”o” ns=”urn:schemas-microsoft-com:office:office”?>
