Yaroshuk-Tews Becomes Miami's All-Time Winningest Coach
April 12, 2008
RALEIGH, N.C. – University of Miami head women’s tennis coach Paige Yaroshuk-Tews registered her 132nd career win Saturday, becoming the winningest coach in program history as No. 11 Miami won its sixth straight match in a 6-1 victory over No. 45 NC State at the J.W. Isenhour Tennis Center.
Yaroshuk-Tews, who entered the season with 118 career wins, has led UM to 14 wins in this her seventh season at the helm of the women’s tennis program. Her 132nd career win surpasses former UM coach Ian Duvenhage’s mark of 131 career victories set from 1981-88.
With the win, the Hurricanes improve to 14-4 overall and 7-2 in Atlantic Coast Conference action. NC State drops to 11-9 overall and 4-6 in league play.
After Miami went up 1-0 with wins in two of three doubles matches to open the day, No. 80 Romy Farah and No. 20 Laura Vallverdu picked up UM’s second and third points of the afternoon before Bianca Eichkorn clinched the match with a win at No. 4.
Farah, who has now won five of her last six, put the Hurricanes up 2-0 with a 6-2, 6-2 win at No. 3 over Lenka Hojckova.
Her win was followed by Vallverdu’s victory at No. 1. The All-American sophomore, who has now won 13 of her last 14 overall and eight of nine in league play in UM’s top singles position, made quick work of Berkeley Brock, winning 6-2, 6-1. The straight-sets win for Vallverdu was her sixth straight – excluding the suspended UNC match — dating back to March 22. Over that span, she has out-scored her opponents 36-4 in the second set.
Eichkorn’s 6-2, 6-3 win over Julia Roach, her seventh straight singles victory, proved to be the clincher for UM’s fifth straight road win.
Yaroshuk Tews, who took over the UM women’s program in 2001-02, owns a career record of 132-41 (.763). Last year, she also became the first head coach in school history to win at least 20 games for four straight seasons. Under Yaroshuk-Tews’ guidance, the Hurricanes have reached at least the second round of the NCAA Tournament in each of her six seasons atop the program.
With the match already decided, the `Canes would win two of the final three spots. Caren Seenauth beat Catherine Grotz, 6-2, 6-2 at No. 5 and Claudia Wasilewski edging out Neils Barringer, 7-6 (4), 7-6 (5) in the sixth position for UM’s final two points.
Earlier in the afternoon, UM’s No. 1 doubles team of Vallverdu and Farah – currently ranked 15th by the ITA – cruised to their eighth win in their last 11 matches together with a dominant 8-1 win over Grotz and Hojckova to put the Hurricanes out in front. After Barringer and Roach tied it up with a win at No. 3, Eichkorn and Seenauth won for the fourth time in the last five tries with an 8-5 win over Brock and Petrovic at No. 2.
The `Canes will wrap up their regular season when they make the short strip west from Raleigh to Winston-Salem to battle Wake Forest Sunday at 12 p.m. at Leighton Stadium.
