Miami Comes Away With Four Victories in Men's Track

CORAL GABLES – The University of Miami men’s track team wins four individual events in the first ever Hurricane Challenge, Saturday at Cobb Stadium, as an NCAA Regional mark is improved upon.<?xml:namespace prefix=”o” ns=”urn:schemas-microsoft-com:office:office”?>
Cory Nelms continues to have a successful sophomore campaign as he improved on his regional qualifying time from a week ago, with a second place finish in the 110-meter hurdles at 14.04. Senior Les Bradley II came in fifth place with a final time of 14.37. Nelms also took second in the 400-meter hurdles at 54.09.
For the second week in a row, Casey McGinn took the crown in the pole vault. Saturday he reach 4.75m in the win.
Patrick O’Donnell won the 800-meters in 1:55.54, he was trailed by teammate Richard Bernard, who finished strong with a time of 1:55.98. Junior Ryan Woodlee finished in fouth place at 1:59.38.
Woodlee was dominate in his season debut in the 1,500-meters earlier in the day, winning the event in a time of 4:02.59.
Junior Eric Miller and senior Alex Paley finished one-two in the 3,000 meters at 8:57.39 and 8:59.40 respectively.
“It was very pleasing to see the number of wins that we got today,” said head coach Mike Ward.
Elan Daviglus took second in the high jump with a mark of 2.00m and earlier in the day he placed second in the long jump with a leap of 6.66m. Freshman Diego Rosado reached a mark of 6.50m in the long jump, good for a fifth place finish.
Senior Ryan Welter showed a lot of improvement in the javelin, as he recorded a throw of 39.61m, more than five meters better than his throw from last week’s Hurricane Invitational. Junior Chris Tringali finished one spot ahead of Welter with a mark of 44.39m.
Ward added, “Now that spring football has ended, we will look forward to getting our sprinters back in time for the Miami Elite on April 12.”
Next week the track and field teams will be on the road as they travel to <?xml:namespace prefix=”st1″ ns=”urn:schemas-microsoft-com:office:smarttags”?>Gainesville to take part in the Florida Relays, before returning home to host the Miami Elite Invitational Saturday, April 12 at Cobb Stadium.
