All-American Viola Preparing For 2008 NCAA Championships

CORAL GABLES, <?xml:namespace prefix=”st1″ ns=”urn:schemas-microsoft-com:office:smarttags”?>Fla. – University of Miami sophomore diver Brittany Viola is set to compete in her second NCAA Championship this weekend when she represents UM at the 2008 NCAA Division I Women’s Swimming and Diving Championships, March 20-22, at OhioStateUniversity’s McCorkle Aquatic Pavilion.<?xml:namespace prefix=”o” ns=”urn:schemas-microsoft-com:office:office”?>
Viola, a native of Orlando, Fla., is coming off an solid weekend at the NCAA Zone `B’ Championships in Auburn, Ala. where placed first in the platform and third in both the one-meter and three meter events. After scoring a 300.40 in the one-meter finals on the opening day of competition at the zone championships, Viola followed it up with a mark of 315.15 in the three-meter before an impressive 335.30 in the platform final.
Competition this week in Columbus begins with the one-meter event on Thursday before the three-meter event Friday and finally the platform on Saturday. Trials for all three events are slated for 1:30 p.m. each day with the finals taking place during the evening sessions beginning at 7 p.m.
As a freshman, Viola earned All-American status in the platform after a sixth place finish of 294.55 in last year’s NCAA Championships in Minneapolis, Minn. She also earned honorable mention status for a 14th place finish of 291.35 in the three-meter event a day earlier.
Her teammates on the men’s side, sophomore Reuben Ross and freshman J.J. Kinzbach, are continuing preparation for the men’s championships, scheduled for March 28-30 in Federal Way, Wash.
The top 12 women from each of last weekend’s zone championships determined the field at this week’s championships.
