Simkins Takes ACC Crown in Both 200 and 400 Meters

<?xml:namespace prefix=”st1″ ns=”urn:schemas-microsoft-com:office:smarttags”?>CHAPEL HILL, N.C.- The University of Miami’s Krista Simkins claimed the Indoor 200 and 400 meter ACC Championships Saturday afternoon on the campus of the University of North Carolina.<?xml:namespace prefix=”o” ns=”urn:schemas-microsoft-com:office:office”?>
The All-American ran provisional times in both events, 23.65 in the 200m and 53.84 in the 400m. With the wins Simkins will be heading to the NCAA Indoor National Championships, held once again on the University of Arkansas’ campus.
With Simkins participating in two individual events on the day, fellow All-American Ena Leufroy stepped in for her in the 4×400 relay, joining standout freshmen Ti’erra Brown and Takecia and Tameka Jameson. The team ran a time of 3:42.06, good for second place and all-ACC honors. Leufroy also ran in the 800-meter run, finishing in eighth (2:17.62).
Senior Khadija Talley finished second in the shot put with a provisional toss of 15.60m (51-02.25), her second all-ACC performance of the weekend (weight throw).
Brown, performing in the 60-meter hurdles scored for her team with a time of 8.31. The provisional time was good for a fifth place finish in the event.
Another freshman showed her talent in the 60-meter dash. Tara Thomas ran a fourth place 7.47, just one spot away from finishing with all-conference honors.
Finally, sophomore Deandra Doyley who was the only member of the Hurricanes to compete in all three days of the championships, finished sixth in the triple jump with a mark of 11.81m (38-09.00). Doyley took part in Thursday’s pentathlon as well as the long jump on Friday.
Names of all participants in this year’s NCAA Indoor National Championships will be released on March 10, with multiple Hurricanes hoping to make the cut.
