Men's Tennis Wins Second Straight

Coral Gables, Fla. – The No. 36 University of Miami men’s tennis team won its second dual match in as many days with a 6-1 defeat of Samford on Friday afternoon at the Neil Schiff Tennis Center.
The Hurricanes (2-0) swept all three doubles matches to earn the first point of the afternoon, and then went on to win five of six singles matches over the Bulldogs (0-2).
“I’m proud of our guys for opening the season with two wins,” said assistant Miami coach C.J. Weber. “It’s good to get a couple Ws under our belt. The team is looking forward to playing Florida on Tuesday – that will be a big match for us. We’re fired up and motivated.”
“It’s a quiet confidence,” added volunteer assistant Mel Spence.
The Hurricanes’ play certainly spoke loud enough as they won all three doubles matches by a comfortable margin, including an 8-4 victory for the 18th-ranked tandem of Vivek Subramanian and David Rosenfeld.
Subramanian also claimed a dominating 6-0, 6-4 singles win at No. 4 over Samford’s Brian Dushock, while J.C. Whitner knocked off Richard Walsh in straight sets at No. 6 to put UM up 3-0.
Miami’s 97th-ranked David Rosenfeld rebounded from Thursday’s singles loss, to cruise to a 6-2, 6-1 victory at the No. 2 position over Renan Silveira to earn the match-clinching fourth point for the Hurricanes.
No. 7 Daniel Vallverdu earned his team-best 12th win of the 2007-08 season with a 7-5, 6-2 win over Jordan Delass in the No. 1 spot, while Miami’s Keith Crowley improved to 2-0 with a hard-fought win at No. 5.
Miami returns to action on Tues., Jan. 29, with a 2 p.m. match versus No. 14 Florida at the Neil Schiff Tennis Center. Admission is free and free pizza will be available to fans.
