CORAL GABLES, Fla. – The University of Miami swimming and diving team opens its spring season Friday when the Hurricanes host Notre Dame at the Norman Whitten Student Union Pool at 11 a.m. The `Canes, who finished the fall portion of their schedule with a dual-meet record of 5-1, will compete in four meets over the next month before heading to Atlanta for the ACC Championships, Feb. 20-23.
“The girls are really confident after such a great fall season,” head coach Christie Shefchunas said. “They came back from Christmas break excited and passionate and they’ve really been doing an amazing job of training over the last few weeks.”
UM’s swimmers will resume competition for the first time in over a month while Notre Dame opened its spring season Wednesday with a 142-120 loss to LSU at Pine Crest High School in Ft. Lauderdale.
“It is going to be a big test against Notre Dame Friday,” Shefchunas added. “We are going to need everyone to step up and hopefully we can keep our confidence rolling into this meet and the rest of the spring season.”
Miami opened the fall schedule with a convincing 176-43 at home against Florida International, Oct. 12, before taking out Florida Gulf Coast in Ft. Myers the following day, 156-84. The `Canes moved to 3-0 with a 151.5-85.5 victory over Villanova at home, Oct. 16, but suffered their first loss later that weekend at Florida State, 81-200. UM rebounded with a 179-101 win against Houston to start November and wrapped up its dual meet slate with a 165.5-132.5 win over Florida Atlantic, Nov. 9, giving the Hurricanes their first win over FAU in three seasons.
After its dual-meet schedule concluded, UM traveled to Atlanta to participate in the Georgia Tech Invitational, Nov. 16-18, before the divers closed out the season with the Ohio State Invitational, Nov. 30 – Dec. 1 and the CAMO Invitational, Dec. 6-9.
The `Canes will hit the road next week when they travel to Nashville to take on Vanderbilt at the Centennial Sportsplex, Friday, Jan. 11 at 11 a.m.
