Green Defeats Orange in Game 1 of Fall World Series, 6-5

CORAL GABLES, Fla. – – Junior first baseman Yonder Alonso hit a solo home in the top of the seventh to lift the Green team to a 6-5 win over the Orange team in the University of Miami’s fall world series at Mark Light Field Tuesday afternoon. It was the first game of the three-game series.

The Hurricanes are taking part in the first-ever Fall World Series held under UM head coach Jim Morris.

Alonso and sophomore catcher Jason Hagerty each finished 3-for-4. Alonso doubled, homered twice and drove in four RBI to help the Green team to the win. Carlos Gutierrez tossed 1 2/3 innings to pick up the win. Sophomore shortstop Ryan Jackson led the Orange team going 2-for-3 with a triple and a walk. Redshirt sophomore first baseman Chris Gawenda went 1-for-2 with a solo home run. Freshman lefty Chris Hernandez pitched well for the Orange team. He struck out five batters in three innings and allowed one hit. Sophomore right-hander Kyle Bellamy struck out four batters in two innings and gave up two hits.

Gawenda put the Orange team up, 1-0, when he hit a solo home run to right field in the bottom of the second. Dennis Raben’s RBI single made it, 2-0, in the bottom of the third.

Alonso’s first home run of the game pulled the Green team within, 2-1, in the top of the fourth. The Green team scored four runs in the top of the fifth. Freshman catcher Yasmani Grandal had a two-run single and Alonso hit a two-run double to make it, 5-2.

Orange pulled within 5-3 in the bottom of the fifth and tacked on the tying runs in the bottom of the sixth.

Alonso homered with one out in the seventh and Green held on for the win.

The Orange-Green World Series continues Thursday and Friday at Mark Light Field.
