COLUMBUS, Ohio – Three University of Miami women’s tennis players were victorious Thursday at the 2007 ITA National Indoor Championships in Columbus, Ohio with All-American Laura Vallverdu picking up a first-round singles win and the doubles tandem of Romy Farah and Caren Seenauth winning in the opening round as well.

Vallverdu came back after falling behind early to defeat Duke’s Reka Zsilinszka, 2-6, 6-2, 7-6 while Farah and Seenauth took out the North Carolina duo of Sophie Grabinski and Sanaz Marand 9-7 in first-round doubles action.

Main draw singles play resumes Friday for Vallverdu when she faces Georgia Tech’s Amanda McDowell, who defeated Angela Dipastina of Ohio State, 6-1, 7-5, in the first round. Vallverdu and McDowell faced each other earlier this season at the Riviera/ITA All-American Championships where the two battled to a third-set tiebreaker with McDowell coming away with the 5-7, 7-5, 7-6 (9) victory.

Farah and Seenauth will also return to the court Friday when the main draw quarterfinal round begins. The duo will be going up against Ohio State’s Christina Keesey and Angela Dipastina after they defeated Megan Moulton-Levy and Katarina Zoricic of William & Mary, 9-7, Thursday to advance.

If Vallverdu is to get by McDowell in the round of 16, she will play again Friday in the quarterfinal round against the winner of Fresno State’s Melanie Gloria and Northwestern’s Maria Mosolova. If Farah and Seenauth win Friday, they will play again Saturday in the semifinal round against the winner of Fresno State’s team of Gloria and Tinesta Rowe and LSU’s duo of Megan Falcon and Hannah Robinson.

The tournament, hosted by Ohio State University at the Racquet Club of Columbus, began with 32 singles players and 16 doubles teams on both the women’s and men’s side. Main draw and consolation play will continue through Sunday when all of the finals matches will be played.

Two other UM women’s tennis players, Claudia Wasilewski and Bianca Eichkorn, will be in action this weekend at the FSU Invitational, Nov. 2-4, in Tallahassee. In addition to both playing in the singles draw, the two will team up and compete in the doubles bracket as well.
