FOOTBALL PRESS CONFERENCE TRANSCRIPT
Head Coach Randy Shannon:
OPENING STATEMENTS:
“We have Georgia Tech this week. We have to bounce back from what happened last week. We had positive things happen in the second half, but we have to start off fast and finish that way. We have to stay on them as a coaching staff. We are doing everything that we have to do get those guys to understand that they have to start fast at practice. We try to get the sense of urgency going all the time. We are not going to give up. They’re not holding their heads down, but they are trying to understand what we have to get done. We are going to keep forcing it, and doing things that we have to get done.”
ON COACH NIX’S CONNECTION TO GEORGIA TECH:
“It’s a totally different offense than they ran last year. They never run the same offense against an opponent. You play one way one week, and then it is a different offense the next. You don’t expect to see the same things.”
ON LINEBACKER Glenn Cook:
“Glenn Cook is still out. He is on scholarship. On gameday, I tell him that he has to be there helping out and be a part of this team. He is continually doing that and he is helping out a lot. He is not playing, but he is very smart.”
ON LEADERSHIP OF THE TEAM:
“My definition of a leader is getting somebody to do something that you don’t want to do. If you know a guy is messing up and not doing his job, you work with him to match your level. If you get him to match your level then you are a great leader. We don’t have an outspoken leader, but we have some guys like [Glenn] Cook being one of them. Kenny Phillips leads by performance. He goes around and makes plays trying to get guys to step up.”
ON THE RETURN OF CORNERBACK Glenn Sharpe:
“Glenn has been ready. He just has to practice that way. He’s back at corner and we have a battle for that position.”
ON WIDE RECEIVER Darnell Jenkins:
“He has done a great job. Everybody was giving up on Darnell, but I never did. I am proud of him. I am not going to let up on him though. He knows that and he knows how I am. He is going to continue to do the right things.”
ON CHANGES IN THE KICKING GAME:
“Well, we are competing right now. We need a punter that can punt the ball and a field goal kicker that can make field goals. We have to open it up and whoever does a good job will be in the game.”
ON COLLEGE FOOTBALL:
“If you play a different level of competition based on your opponent, you will probably lose the game. Everybody on the team has two or three playmakers on their team. If you get into a funk and they don’t make the plays, there will tough times for you. I think that the biggest problem in college football is all of this recruiting stuff. When you get them, you have to de-recruit them. They have been put on a pedestal you have to make them feel that they are human. When you finally get them like that, they don’t want to work anymore. That is what we have to work on at the University of Miami with these early commitments. We are getting guys that are good players and good people. There is not one guy that we have recruited that has talked to me about playing time. That is why I am proud about this recruiting class. If all of them stay with us come February, we have a great future here. They are worried about winning.”
