Miami Head Coach Randy Shannon
On Miami’s overall performance today:
“Today wasn’t a very good day for the University of Miami. The guys have to understand that when you come up to an opponent like the University of Oklahoma they are a very great team, and have a lot of talent, just like we have a lot of talent. When you have penalties like we had today and we don’t communicate and don’t do the things that coaches teach us to do, we won’t be successful.”
“There are things that have to get corrected and have to get done, and we will get them done. Coach Stoops and his staff have done a wonderful job and they did a wonderful thing today.”
On what Miami’s keys to the games were:
“Today before the game I said if we can win the field position game, we have a great shot. If we don’t give up a big play in the first quarter, we have a great shot. If we can keep the crowd out of it, we have a great shot. First quarter, too many big plays, and the next thing you know the crowd is into it and the momentum swings. But we came back and fought back, the offense got going in the second quarter late and going into halftime we scored a touchdown. We had a shot, but we came back out in the second half and lost field position. There were too many big plays on defense and you can’t win games when you give up big plays.”
On any surprises from Oklahoma:
“No, that’s the thing that’s upsetting. Things that we practice are the exact same things that we run in practice. That comes guys having to trust what we’re doing in practice and trust what we’re doing on the field. That’s a learning point. I have too much pride and think these players have too much pride. They didn’t quit and they kept fighting, but there were too many big plays. When you give up too many big plays you can’t be successful that way.”
On Sam Bradford’s performance:
“He did a great job. He got the ball where it was supposed to be and the coaching staff did a great job of calling the plays. Hats off to him.”
