Four Hurricanes Selected in 2007 MLB Draft

CORAL GABLES, Fla. – – Four Miami Hurricanes were selected on the second and final day of the 2007 Major League Baseball Draft Wednesday. Redshirt junior LHP Scott Maine, junior LHP Manny Miguelez, senior RHP Danny Gil and junior RHP Enrique Garcia were selected in the first 34 rounds.

Maine, a native of Palm Beach Gardens, was the 193rd overall pick in the sixth round by the Arizona Diamondbacks. He went 5-5 with a 3.28 ERA in 17 starts and ranked third in individual pitching in Atlantic Coast Conference games with the third lowest ERA (2.73) among weekend starters. He had 74 strikeouts in 96 innings.

Miguelez, who prepped at Coral Reef High School, was the 271st pick in the eighth round by the Detroit Tigers. He finished this season 1-2 with a 5.60 ERA. He had a good sophomore season going 8-4 with a 4.31 ERA holding opponents to a .227 batting average.

Gil, who played his high school ball locally at Christopher Columbus, was the 921st pick in the 30th round by the Houston Astros. Gil matched the Miami all-time career appearance record with his 123rd appearance in 2007 after leading appearing in a team-high 34 games. He finished his UM career 3-0 with a 3.50 ERA and six saves while striking out 53 in 54 innings. He held opponents to a .208 batting average.

Garcia, who hails from Mechanicsville, Md., was selected in the 34th round by the Chicago Cubs as the 1024th pick. Garcia went 8-4 with a 3.82 ERA in his first season with the Hurricanes. He added a save and had two complete game performances. He struck out 80 in 92 innings. He ranked eighth in individual pitching with a 3.29 ERA in ACC games this season.
