May 25, 2007
Athens, G.A. – University of Miami women’s tennis junior Audra Cohen advances to the Quarterfinals of the 2007 NCAA Singles Tennis Championship with a win Friday afternoon at the Dan Magill Tennis Complex on the University of Georgia campus. Today the Intercollegiate Tennis Association (ITA) announced the new team rankings, as the Hurricanes finished the season ranked ninth in the nation.
With the win, Cohen becomes the second player since the 2004 season to win the Sweet 16, and the seventh player in Miami women’s tennis history. The Plantation, Fla. native is now second all-time in single-season records with a 39-2 overall mark. Former Miami tennis star, Megan Bradley leads with a 44-2 record she posted during the 2004-05 season.
Cohen, who is the top-seed in the women’s singles bracket, defeated Stanford’s 14th-ranked Celia Durkin in three-sets. After dropping the first-set 3-6, Cohen stepped-it up in the second to win it 6-4. In the third-set tie-breaker, Cohen proved she was ready to close it out and walk away with the victory. After trailing 2-1, the Plantation, Fla. native nailed in five unanswered games. Finally, with the lady Hurricane up 5-2, Cohen broke through Durkin’s serve to finish 6-2, sending the Cardinal home, and claiming the match-victory.
Tomorrow’s quarterfinals will see a match-up against another Cardinal, as Cohen faces No. 41 Lindsay Burdette of Stanford. The winner of that match will move forward into the semifinals. The match can be followed live at georgiadogs.com.
Earlier in the day, Burdette upset No. 13 Georgia Rose of Northwestern, 7-6 (7-5), 2-6, 6-4.
