Garcia's Complete Game Gives Miami Series Win, 2-1

Winston Salem, N.C. – Junior right-hander Enrique Garcia struck out nine in a complete game performance to lift Miami to a 2-1 series clinching win over Wake Forest Sunday afternoon at Hooks Stadium in the final game of the Atlantic Coast Conference series. Blake Tekotte had three of Miami’s 10 hits as the Hurricanes improved to 32-20 and 14-13 in the ACC.
Garcia (6-3) threw his second complete game this season. He limited the Demon Deacons to one run on seven hits. He walked five batters. Dennis Raben and Mark Sobolewski each had two hits.
Ben Hunter (5-6) took the loss for the Demon Deacons (29-24, 12-15 ACC). He threw six innings, allowed two runs on seven hits, struck out four and walked five. Ben Terry and Willy Fox each had two hits for Wake Forest.
The series came down to the final inning. Evan Ocheltree walked with one out and moved to second on a groundout. Dan Rosaia drew a walk on a full count. Ben Linnenkohl grounded out to Garcia to end the game.
Wake Forest led off the bottom of the eighth with a single and a walk. Fox grounded into a double play for the first two outs. Dustin Hood followed with a fly-out to right field ending the eighth.
Wake Forest loaded the bases in the bottom of the sixth on two walks and an infield single with one out. Garcia then induced an inning ending double play keeping the game at 2-1.
Miami took a 2-1 lead in the top of the fourth. Ryan Jackson’s RBI single scored Gus Menendez, who led off the fourth with a double down the left field line. Tekotte followed with a bloop single into left center and scored on Roger Tomas’ RBI single.
Willy Fox’s RBI single gave the Demon Deacons a 1-0 lead in the bottom of the first. Ben Terry singled off the pitcher’s mound with one out before score on Fox’s hit.
The Hurricanes looked to have taken a 2-0 lead in the top of the first when Dennis Raben hit a ball that Wake Forest’s Ben Terry made a diving attempt at. After a discussion, it was ruled a catch to end the inning.
Miami wraps up the regular season Thursday, Friday and Saturday against Duke at Mark Light Field.
