Coral Gables, Fla. (www. hurricanesports.com) – – Student-athletes, coaches and staff of the University of Miami Athletic Department spent last Saturday painting nearby Virrick Park in Coconut Grove. They also planted a vegetable garden.

This event was spearheaded and coordinated by the University of Miami Student Athlete Advisory Committee.

“The University of Miami student-athlete, coaches and staff performed a much needed service for the community of Coconut Grove,” said Wesley Carroll, former Hurricane football player and director of Virrick Park. “The group was energetic and organized. The city of Miami and the Virrick Park staff appreciate the service and we would love to have them back for another project in the future.”

“The community service project at Virrick Park this past Saturday was a huge success, said Sara Duncan, a member of the volleyball team. “A project that might have taken days took our athletic department just a few hours! It shows you an example of strength in numbers, and how much of an impact we can make when we all work together. As student-athletes, I think it’s important to give back to the surrounding communities that have given us so much support. We are more than happy to give the kids who look up to us the most a freshly painted pool to play in for the summer.”
