Hurricanes Complete Successful Second Day of 2007 ACC Outdoor Championships

COLLEGE PARK, Md. – Led by a trio of first place finishes in the heptathlon, the discuss and the long jump, the University of Miami women’s track and field team wrapped up the second day of competition at the 2007 ACC Outdoor Championships in first place with 54 points.

Leading off the day’s success was Amy Seward who won the ACC heptathlon title with a total of 5,348 points capped off by a first-place mark in the long jump.

After taking the heptathlon championship, Seward returned later in the afternoon to become part of a UM trio that would finish first, second and third in the long jump. Seward’s mark of 6.21 meters (20-04.50 feet) would place third behind UM senior Brenda Faluade and freshman Deandra Doyley who place first and second, respectively, with a pair of marks of 6.29 meters (20-07.50).

In the women’s discuss junior Khadija Talley claimed the ACC championship with a throw of 53.19 meters (174-06) which edged out North Carolina’s Jocelyn White by three centimeters.

Several Hurricanes qualified for Sunday’s finals during Saturday’s preliminary trials. In the women’s 100-meter hurdles, Doyley recorded the eighth-fastest time of the day with a finish of 13.91 seconds. Senior Ginou Etienne earned the day’s fastest time in the 400-meters, clocking in at 52.46 seconds. Freshman Ashley Dukes and sophomore Krista Simkins had the second and fourth-fastest time in the 100-meters while sophomore Ena Leufroy’s time of 2:10.48 was the eighth-fastest time in the 800-meters. Simkins also earned a berth into the finals of the 200-meters with a first-place time of 23.24 seconds.

Miami concluded the second day with 54 points sitting ahead of second-place Virginia Tech by 7.5 points.
