No. 11 Clemson Evens Series with 4-1 Win over Miami

CLEMSON, S.C. – – Clemson’s Ryan Hinson held Miami to one run on three hits and the 11th ranked Tigers evened the series with the Hurricanes with a 4-1 win Saturday night in front of 5,329 fans at Doug Kingsmore Stadium. Jason Hagerty drove in Miami’s only run of the game and finished 1-for-3 with one RBI.
Dennis Raben and Dave DiNatale each had one hit for the Hurricanes (16-13, 4-7 ACC).
Hinson struck out six batters in six innings of work before giving way to Stephen Clyne who pitched two scoreless innings in relief. Daniel Moskos recorded the final three outs in picking up his sixth save for the Tigers (18-8, 5-3 ACC).
Miami starter Scott Maine (2-5) tossed six innings for the Hurricanes. He allowed four runs, two earned, on seven hits and recorded four strikeouts. David Gutierrez pitched the final two innings for the Hurricanes.
The Tigers put up three runs in the bottom of the third inning. Clemson loaded the bases in the bottom of the third. J.D. Burgess was hit by a pitch to lead off the inning. Addison Johnson reached on a throwing error by Maine on a sacrifice bunt attempt. Brad Chalk then laid down a bunt single. Harbin hit into a fielder’s choice scoring Burgess for a 1-0 lead. Marquez Smith’s ground out brought in Johnson to make it, 2-0. D’Alessio then looped a double down the right field line putting Clemson ahead, 3-0.
Raben got Miami going in the top of the fifth. He ripped a double down the left field line and moved to third on DiNatale’s single to right center. Hagerty then bounced a base-hit over the head of the second baseman that scored Raben pulling UM within, 3-1. Jonathan Weislow was then called out after a third foul ball while trying to bunt. Tekotte then hit a line drive that was caught and turned into a double play ending UM’s inning.
The Tigers went back ahead, 4-1, in the bottom of the fifth. Chalk knocked a single into center field. After he stole second, a throwing error after Marquez Smith’s infield single allowed Chalk to score as the Tigers led, 4-1.
Miami looked to take advantage of two walks and a Clemson error in the top of the second. Mark Sobolewski drew a walk to lead off the in second. When Sobolewski broke for second, a dropped throw from the catcher allowed him to get all the way to second. After a fly out, Raben walked, but Hinson struck out Dave DiNatale with runners on the corners for the second out. UM tried a double steal, but Sobolewski was caught stealing trying to steal home to end the inning.
The Hurricanes and Tigers wrap up their series Sunday at 12 p.m. The game has been moved up one hour due to the threat of inclement weather in the Clemson area. RHP Enrique Garcia will face Clemson RHP David Kopp. The game will be televised live on CSS.
Game Notes: Clemson left fielder Addison Johnson had two diving catches in the left center gap robbing UM of two base hits. His first catch in the third inning robbed Blake Tekotte of a base-hit that would have scored Jason Hagerty. Johnson’s second diving catch took a base hit away from Roger Tomas in the top of the fourth … Tekotte had his 11-game hitting come to end as he finished 0-for-3 with a walk.
