Men's Tennis Sweeps Boston College to Continue Win Streak
March 25, 2007
Coral Gables, Fla. – The No. 37 University of Miami men’s tennis team swept its second opponent in three matches, cruising past Boston College, 7-0, on Sunday afternoon at the Neil Schiff Tennis Center.
The Hurricanes had played 11 straight ranked opponents entering today’s match versus the unranked Eagles (4-12, 0-5 ACC), including seven contests versus top-25 teams. With Miami’s fifth-straight win, the `Canes improved to 9-7 overall and 4-1 in the ACC to move into first place in the league. No. 3 Virginia, who entered Sunday with a perfect 3-0 record in conference play, faces No. 12 Wake Forest today and would re-claim the top spot with a win.
Miami took the 1-0 lead over Boston College after winning all three doubles matches. The 12th-ranked top-flight doubles duo of seniors Luigi D’Agord (Freeport, Bahamas) and Josh Cohen (Weston, Fla./Laurel Springs) dominated their match with their second 8-0 win of the year. In the pair’s last five-straight wins, they have outscored their opponents 40-9, not allowing more than three points per match.
With 37th-ranked sophomore Daniel Vallverdu (Valencia, Venezuela) out today due to an injury sustained on Saturday versus Maryland, there was some shuffling in both the doubles and singles lineups. Junior Vivek Subramanian (East Brunswick, N.J.) and freshman Hector Nieto (Key Biscayne, Fla./Coral Gables) paired together for the first time at the No. 2 doubles position, and went on to win 8-4, while at No. 3, freshmen J.C. Whitner (Bradenton, Fla./Pendleton) and Barnabas Carrega (Basiglio, Italy) paired up for the first time in two months, improving to 4-1 on the year with the 8-4 win.
In singles competition, 12th-ranked D’Agord (No. 1), Cohen (No. 2), Whitner (No. 4), Nieto (No. 5) and Carrega (No. 6) used straight sets to pick up wins, while at No. 3, Subramanian battled back from a 2-6 first-set loss, to overtake his opponent, 6-4, 10-5 for his third ACC win of the season and 14th overall.
With a 6-3, 6-1 win at No. 1, D’Agord remained undefeated in ACC play at 5-0 and improved to 17-3 on the year, while at No. 2, Cohen’s win moved him to 4-1 in the league and 16-8 overall.
“The freshmen are really stepping up for us,” said Miami’s third-year head coach Mario Rincon. “Additionally, our seniors – Josh and Luigi – are really playing at their best. We need everyone to step up and cover for Danny as he continues to get better.
It was a good weekend for us, and now we’re looking forward to playing North Carolina and Duke.”
The Hurricanes return to the road this weekend to face a pair of tough ACC opponents. Miami opens the weekend at No. 14 North Carolina (13-0, 1-0 ACC), on Friday, March 30, at 3 p.m. and then take on No. 17 Duke (7-6, 0-1 ACC) on Sunday, April 1, at 1 p.m.
