Hurricanes Win Third Straight ACC Match with a 6-1 Defeat over the Wolfpack

Coral Gables, Fla. – Twelfth ranked University of Miami women’s tennis team defeated No. 38 North Carolina State 6-1 in Atlantic Coast Conference action today at the Neil Schiff Tennis Center. The Hurricanes (11-2, 3-0 ACC) extend their win streak to six matches, as the Wolfpack fall 8-4 overall and 0-2 in conference play.
For the third consecutive season, Miami went undefeated on the weekend to open up ACC play, capturing wins against in-state rival No. 27 Florida State 4-3, followed by a 6-1 win over No. 14 Wake Forest, along with today’s defeat over N.C. State.
In singles, four Hurricane players captured 3-0 records including No. 1 junior Audra Cohen, No. 34 senior Audrey Banada, and juniors Romy Farah and Gina Sabatino. Doubles duo No. 30 Cohen and junior Caren Seenauth posted undefeated wins in doubles to open up ACC play and are now 8-0 overall.
The day began with Miami utilizing their competitive drive to grab the first point for the Hurricanes with No. 8 ranked Banada and Farah taking the first win over Daria Petrovic and Alejandra Guerra, 8-2, while Cohen and Seenauth faced Julia Roach and Kate Green and finished with an 8-6 win. In the No. 3 doubles spot, Sabatino and freshman Claudia Wasilewski defeated Neils Barringer and Berkley Broch 8-6.
Singles got underway as Sabatino, who played in the No. five spot, did not allow her opponent Alejandra Guerra to post a single point in the first set, finishing 6-0, before taking the singles win with a 6-2 win in the second set.
Banada ended her singles match similar to the first, as she posted a 6-0, 6-2 win over Berkeley Broch to finish with weekend on a six-singles match win streak.
Farah finished 6-3 in her first set, and took an early 5-2 lead in the next set en route to the third singles point and clinching the match for Miami. The Cali, Colombia native finished her second set 6-2 to put the Hurricanes up 4-0.
On court #1, Cohen claimed her 23rd singles win of the season in conjunction to an 18-singles match win streak after she finished her match 6-3, 6-3 over a highly competitive opponent, Dari Petrovic in the No. 1 position.
After the Wolfpack claimed their only point in No. 6 singles, Seenauth finished the day on court #4 against Kate Green, playing at the No. 4 spot. Green captured the first set at 6-3. But it did not stop the driving force of Seenauth as she dominated her opponent to sweep the second set 6-0, before holding Green to just one game in the final set at 6-1.
Miami will get back on the courts Friday March 16 as they host Crimson of Harvard University in non-conference action. The match is set to begin at 9 a.m. at the Neil Schiff Tennis Center.
