Bonnies Hold Off No. 11 Miami, 5-2

CORAL GABLES, Fla. – – St. Bonaventure’s Eddie Williams struck out a career-high eight batters and the Bonnies upset No. 11 Miami, 5-2, Tuesday night at Mark Light Field in nonconference baseball action. Freshman third baseman Mark Sobolewski led the Hurricanes (9-6) going 4-for-4 with one run scored, but the Hurricanes only had seven hits in the game and stranded 15 base runners.

Yonder Alonso went 1-for-3 and drove in both runs for UM. John Housey suffered the loss for the Hurricanes allowing two runs on five hits in three innings. He struck out two. Enrique Garcia made his first career start for UM and allowed one run on four hits in three innings. He had three strikeouts. Alex Koronis pitched two scoreless innings.

Williams held UM to two runs on six hits. He had the eight strikeouts but also walked seven batters and hit one batter. Josh Perkins pitched the final inning for the Bonnies for his first save of the season.

Miami rallied from a 1-0 deficit in the bottom of the third. Jemile Weeks walked, stole second and reached third on one of Sobolewski’s three doubles. Alonso’s two-run single put UM ahead, 2-1.

St. Bonaventure regained the lead in the top of the sixth when Randy Moley hit a two-run double to right that got by a diving Dennis Raben giving the Bonnies a 3-2 lead.

Miami had a chance to tie the game in the bottom of the seventh when Sobolewski hit a two-out double and Alonso walked. Dave DiNatale was then hit by a pitch to load the bases. Ryan Kerr got Raben to hit into a fielder’s choice to end the threat.

The Hurricanes threatened again in the bottom of the eighth when Richard O’Brien was hit by a pitch to lead off the inning. He reached second on Ryan Jackson’s sacrifice bunt. Kerr then got pinch-hitter Chris Petralli to strike out swinging. Weeks followed with his third walk of the game and O’Brien moved to third on a balk. Gus Menendez flied out to left field to end that UM threat.

St. Bonaventure tacked on insurance runs in the top of the ninth on T.J. Pennino’s two-run double to right field to put SBU ahead, 5-2.

Miami’s last chance came in the ninth as Sobolewski led off with his third double of the game. DiNatale walked with one out. After another UM out, O’Brien was hit by a pitch, but Jackson grounded out to end the game.

Moley led St. Bonaventure going 3-for-5 with two RBI. Brian Pellegrini and Matt Mardeusz each had two hits for the Bonnies, who out-hit UM, 11-7.

Miami returns to action Wednesday night when the Hurricanes host their third straight Atlantic 10 opponent, La Salle at 7 p.m. RHP Jason Santana will start for UM.
