No. 12 Hurricanes Take Fordham Series Opener, 14-8

CORAL GABLES, Fla. – – Freshman third baseman Mark Sobolewski drove in five runs while Blake Tekotte and Jemile Weeks each had four RBI to lead No. 12 Miami to a 14-8 win over Fordham in the series opener Friday night at Mark Light Field. Scott Maine (2-2) tossed five scoreless innings for his second win of the season for the Hurricanes who moved to 7-5.
Maine struck out five and scattered four hits. He started off the game by striking out the side. Sobolewski finished 3-for-5 with two runs and five RBI. Weeks was 2-for-5 with four RBI while Tekotte went 2-for-2 with four RBI. Roger Tomas finished 2-for-3 with two doubles. Miami and Fordham both tallied 13 hits a piece in the contest.
Jordan Lert led Fordham (0-4) going 3-for-4 with a pair of runs and one RBI. Rich Goulian, Eric Reese and Brian Keeney each had two hits.
Miami scored four runs in the bottom of the second. Sobolewski reached on a passed ball after striking out. After a throwing error, he scored on Richard O’Brien’s base-hit through the left side putting UM ahead, 1-0. Ryan Jackson followed with a walk. Tekotte’s RBI single scored O’Brien giving the Hurricanes a 2-0 lead. Weeks doubled in Tekotte and Jackson for a 4-0 Miami lead.
Tekotte’s three-run double scored David Gutierrez, O’Brien and Dave DiNatale in the bottom of the third as Miami led, 7-0.
Sobolewski blasted his first career home run – a three-run shot off the batter’s eye in center field giving Miami a 10-0 lead in the bottom of the fourth.
Weeks launched a two-run home run in the bottom of the fifth giving the Hurricanes a 12-0 lead. Tomas continued the inning with a walk and moved to third on Alonso’s double off the right field wall. Sobolewski’s then drove in both runners when he singled to center field to make it, m14-0.
Fordham used two two-run home runs to pull within 14-4 in the top of the sixth. Eric Reese doubled before Bobby DiNardo homered to left field to make it, 14-2. Jordan Lert was then hit by a pitch. He scored on John Mollicone’s two-run home run.
Mike Mobbs drew a bases loaded walk to get the Rams within, 14-5, in the top of the seventh.
Fordham tacked on three more runs in the top of the ninth on Lert’s solo home run to lead off the inning. Goulian had a two-run single to cap off the scoring for Fordham.
Miami and Fordham will continue its series Saturday night at 7 p.m. Freshman LHP Eric Erickson (1-1, 2.77 ERA) will face Fordham’s Cory Riordan (0-0, 7.20 ERA).
Game Notes: Sobolewski now has 15 RBI in the last four games for the Hurricanes after putting up five in the win Friday night … Tekotte matched a career-best with the four RBI while Weeks was one shy of matching his career-high … Mained pitched five scoreless innings for the second time this season … Fordham hit three home runs off Hurricane pitching … RHP David Gutierrez pinch-ran for Ryan Jackson in the third inning and scored his first career run … Outfielder Jonathan Weislow picked up his first career hit with a single up the middle in the bottom of the seventh.
