Men's Tennis Drops ACC Opener at Florida State
Feb. 24, 2007
Tallahassee, Fla. – The 10th-ranked Florida State University men’s tennis team won the doubles point and three-straight singles matches to upend the University of Miami, 5-2, on Saturday afternoon in the ACC opener for both teams at the Scott Speicher Tennis Center.
The 26th-ranked Hurricanes (4-5, 0-1 ACC) dropped their fourth-straight match versus a ranked opponent and fell to the Seminoles for just the 10th time in 55 meetings, while FSU (7-2, 1-0 ACC) managed to avenge its 2006 7-0 loss at Miami.
The Hurricanes top-flight doubles pairing of seniors Luigi D’Agord (Freeport, Bahamas) and Josh Cohen (Valencia, Venezuela) – ranked 37th in the nation in the latest FILA/ITA Doubles Poll, won their 10th match of the season, downing FSU’s Ytai Abougzir and Jonathas Sucupira, 8-6.
At the No. 1 singles position, 52nd-ranked D’Agord bounced back from a poor first set to pick up his third straight victory and eighth in dual-match play, defeating Abougzir, 1-6, 6-1, 7-6 (6). Junior Vivek Subramanian (East Brunswick, N.J.) earned Miami’s second point, downing FSU’s Maciek Sykut, 3-6, 7-6 (2), 6-3 in the No. 4 spot.
“FSU played well today,” said third-year Miami coach Mario Rincon. “We need to do better, but I’m encouraged by the continuing improvement from Vivek.”
The Hurricanes return home to the Neil Schiff Tennis Center for the first time in a month to continue their challenging schedule, playing host to No. 2 Ohio State (11-1) on Saturday, March 10, at 2 p.m.
