Miami Finishes the 2007 ACC Championships Sweeping the Diving Events

Chapel Hill, N.C. – The University of Miami swimming and diving team concluded their final day of competition at the 2007 ACC Championships tonight at North Carolina’s Koury Natatorium. The Hurricanes finished seventh place overall with a score of 299.
The weekend finished with the Hurricanes sweeping the men’s and women’s diving competitions for the first time in ACC history. Junior Jenna Dreyer and freshman Ruben Ross claimed the Most Valuable Diver awards in their respective events.
Earlier in the day, Miami competed in the platform event at Duke University’s Taishoff Aquatic Center taking first and second place in the women’s and men’s competitions.
Senior Heather Bounds finished the day with a score of 340.0, while freshman Brittany Viola posted a second place finish with a score of 303.45. In the Men’s platform, Ruben Ross notched a score of 398.95 for first place, while senior Derek Starks posted a score of 365.15 tocapture second.
Senior Tara Erwin finished the night with her best time of the season in the 1650 freestyle clocking in at 16:55.92 to take home 13th place.
The 200 yard backstroke saw sophomore Margaret Ravenna post her best time on the season finishing 2:05.94 for 21st place.
Freshman Kirsten Pomerleau registered an impressive sixth place finish in the championship final of the 100 yard freestyle clocking in at 50.87 to capture her fastest time of the season.
In the 200 yard breaststroke, Magda Waszkiewicz touched the wall at 2:21.86 for 17th place, followed by an 18th place finish by freshmen Kelly Peloquin with a time of 2:22.38. Victoria Lubowicz and Christina Rau finished 21st (2:25.69) and 24th (2:27.11) respectively.
Junior Capria DeVenuto touched the wall for 20th place in the 200 yard butterfly with a time of 2:06.93, taking home her fastest time of the season.
In the final event of the night, the Hurricanes finished sixth place in the 400 yard medley relay with a time of 3:27.74. The race was led by freshman Kirsten Pomerleau, followed by rookie Marina Dadic, with junior Emerson Davis and Britta Boesing finising out.
Overall, North Carolina claimed the conference championship after totaling 737 points and taking home their 16th crown and a new league best. Florida State came in second with 642.5 points. Virginia was third with 475 points, while Virginia Tech was fourth with 393.5. Clemson finished fifth with 332 points, and was followed by Maryland (332), Miami (299), Duke (150), Georgia Tech (138), NC State (123.5) and Boston College (77).
