Swimming and Diving Prepare for the ACC Championships

CORAL GABLES, Fla. – The University of Miami swimming and diving squad is set for the Atlantic Coast Conference Championship which is slated to begin Wednesday, Feb. 14 and run through Saturday, Feb. 17 at the University of North Carolina’s Koury Natatorium.
The Hurricanes closed out the season with a 4-5 overall record and a 0-1 mark in the ACC. The 2006-2007 season saw the emergence of a new head swimming coach, Christie Shefchunas, who is looking forward to a talented group of swimmers participating in their first conference championship, including sophomore transfer Britta Boesing, freshmen Katie Eason, Kelly Peloquin, Meredith Hatic, and Victoria Zubowicz.
Miami will also feature some talented divers with freshmen Brittany Viola and Ruben Ross making their ACC Championship debuts.In all, the Hurricanes will send 22 swimmers, 4 female divers, and 2 male divers to compete in 22 events, including five relays.
Sophomore Britta Boesing holds the most number of events led by a Miami swimmer this season with a total of four. Boesing posts the best time on the season in the 100 yard backstroke and sits ninth in the ACC with a time of 57.38. She leads with the fastest times in the 200 backstroke at 2:05.10, 200 yard freestyle at 1:53.78, and the 200 yard Individual Medley (IM) clocking in at 2:06.50. She also finished the season with four first-place wins.
Kirsten Pomerleau leads the Hurricanes after turning in the seasons’ best performances in the 50 yard freestyle, 100 yard freestyle. Pomerleau, who posted four first-place finishes in the 50 freestyle along with two first-place wins in the 100 freestyle sits ninth and eighth place in the ACC standings in the 50 and 100 respectively.
Freshmen Kelly Peloquin and Katie Eason are the only two rookies to lead the Hurricanes in an event and with two apiece. Peloquin holds the fastest time on the season in the 200 breaststroke with a time of 2:18.45 that captured a spot in the ACC standings for eighth place. In the 400 IM, Peloquin finished the season first on the Miami roster with a time of 4:31.45.
Eason leads the Hurricanes in the 100 yard butterfly at 57.88 and 200 yard butterfly with a time of 2:06.41.
Senior Tara Erwin will finish her final regular season with the Hurricanes posting the fastest time on the season in the 500 yard freestyle with a time of 5:04.26, and was the only Miami swimmer to participate in the 1650 freestyle finishing the season with a time of 17:04.75.
The divers are led by junior Jenna Dreyer, who won the one meter springboard final and three meter springboard Final A at the Orlando All-Star Invitational.
Freshman Ruben Ross will compete in the ACC Diving events as he returns to action after finishing second place in the championship at the Orlando All-Star Invitational.
The meet will begin Wednesday, Feb. 14th at 7:00 p.m. with the 800-yard freestyle and 200-yard medley relays. Competition will resume Thursday with preliminaries at 11:00 a.m. and finals at 7:00 p.m. Preliminaries and finals will begin at the same time until the conclusion of the meet Saturday, Feb. 17th.
