CORAL GABLES, Fla. – – Redshirt junior Scott Maine and freshman lefty Eric Erickson combined for a four-hit shutout and sophomore first baseman Yonder Alonso drove in the eventual game-winner in the bottom of the third as No. 5 Miami shut out No. 11 UCLA, 1-0, in college baseball action Friday night at Mark Light Field in front of a sellout crowd of 2,568. The Hurricanes (1-2) picked up their first win of the season while UCLA fell to 2-2.

Maine (1-0) made his first start of the season and two-hit the Bruins through five innings. He struck out five batters. Erickson also held the Bruins to two hits in four innings and recorded five strikeouts in picking up his first collegiate save.

Tyson Brummett (1-1) struck out eight batters in 7.2 innings in his second start of the season for the Bruins. He allowed one run on three hits, but walked four Hurricanes.

Roger Tomas, Dennis Raben and freshman Mark Sobolewski each had one hit for Miami.

Miami took the 1-0 lead in the bottom of the third when center fielder Blake Tekotte drew a walk to lead of the inning. After Jemile Weeks’ sacrifice bunt moved Tekotte to second, Tomas singled to right field putting runners on the corners. Alonso delivered a deep fly ball to center field to score the run.

UCLA threatened in the top of the fourth when Mickey Weisser tripled to lead off the inning. Maine struck out Brandon Crawford looking and got Gabe Cohen to ground out to second base. Casey Haerther then grounded out to third base to end the inning.

The Bruins looked to tie the game again in the top of the sixth after a lead-off double by Tim Stewart and a walk by Weisser put two runners on base with no outs. After a sacrifice bunt moved the runners into scoring position, Erickson struck out Stewart swinging and forced pinch-hitter Will Penniall to fly out to left field to end the sixth.

Alonso started a rally for an insurance run in the bottom of the sixth. With one out, he walked and reached third on Dennis Raben’s double. But Brummett struck consecutive batters to get out of the jam.

UCLA’s last chance came in the top of the ninth. Crawford doubled down the right field line. Pinch-hitter Cody Decker struck out swinging. Penniall then flied out to right field giving the Hurricanes two outs. A wild pitch allowed Crawford to reach third, but Erickson struck out Brady Dolan to end the game.

Aiden Carrithers, Stewart, Weisser and Crawford each had one hit for the Bruins.

The Hurricanes and Bruins will continue their series on Saturday. First-pitch is slated for 7:30 p.m. at Mark Light Field. Senior Danny Gil (0-0, 8.31 ERA) will make his second start of the season for the Hurricanes while LHP Brendan Lafferty (1-0, 7.36 ERA) is the projected started for UCLA.
