UM Baseball Opens Regular Season

CORAL GABLES, Fla. – The University of Miami baseball team will open the 2007 campaign this Friday, Saturday and Sunday (February 2-4) when it hosts Mercer College at Mark Light Field. Game times are 7pm Friday and Saturday with the Sunday contest starting at 1pm.

The Hurricanes, ranked second by Baseball America and third in the USA Today preseason polls are coming off a fifth-place finish in the 2006 College World Series.

Last season, Mercer compiled a 34-26 record and finished third in the Atlantic Sun Conference. The Bears are a veteran team returning seven starters in the field and six pitchers.

On Friday, junior Manny Miguelez (8-4, 4.31 era) will be opposed Brantley New (9-3, 3.60).

Right-handed senior Danny Gil (4-3, 2.66), who started the 2006 season as a reliever and finished strong in a starting role, will be the Hurricanes starter on Saturday going up against Blake Quarles (4-2, 5.33).

On Sunday, freshman Eric Erickson, a two-time All-State selection from Sarasota will be opposed by either Justin Boyette or Boone Webster. Both Boyette and Webster are junior college transfers.
