Women's Tennis Wrap-Up Their Final Day of the FIU Invitational

Miami, Fla. – The fifth ranked University of Miami women’s tennis team closed the weekend at the FIU Invitational coming away with wins in singles and doubles flights. In the singles flight, senior Audrey Banada finished 3-0 in singles Flight 1, while junior Gina Sabatino posted a 3-0 record in singles Flight 4. Two Hurricanes doubles teams finished with undefeated wins in doubles Fight 1 and Flight 3.
In today’s singles matches, Miami faced opponents from tournament host No. 35 Florida International University, while taking on doubles teams from No. 75 Auburn.
Audrey Banada completed the weekend on a high note as she came away with a win over FIU’s Paula Zabala in singles Flight 1, 6-3, 6-1. The 56th ranked senior finished with wins in all three of her singles Fight 1, defeating two ranked opponents, including No. 10 Shadisha Robinson of USF (6-3, 4-6, 7-6 (7-5) and No. 84 Fani Chifchieva of Auburn (6-2, 1-6, 7-6 (7-4).
With an impressive run in singles Flight 4, junior Gina Sabatino finished with a 3-0 record after defeating Nikkita Fountain (6-1, 6-1). Sabatino also defeated Melissa Koning of Auburn (6-1, 6-4), and University of South Florida’s Liz Cruz (7-5, 6-2).
Other wins in singles for the day included No. 53 junior Romy Farah in Flight 2 defeating Egle Petrauskaite of FIU, 6-1, 4-6, 6-3, while in Flight 3 Caren Seenauth posted a 7-5, 6-2 win over Marijana Cutuk of FIU. With her second singles win as a Miami Hurricane, freshman Claudia Wasilewski defeated FIU’s Maria Dolores Pazo 7-5, 6-2 in Flight 5.
In doubles competition, No. 6 Audrey Banada and Romy Farah came away with a 3-0 sweep, while in Flight 3 the duo of Gina Sabatino and Emily Mowery also registered a 3-0 record. Banada and Farah faced Auburn’s Alex Haney and Jil Hastenrath 8-4. Sabatino and Mowery also took on a duo from Auburn, Whitney Chappell and Kelly Adams, defeating the Tigers 8-6.
The Hurricanes will continue their regular season dual play as they face two days of competition taking on the Owls of Florida Atlantic University January 26, and the Tigers of Princeton January 27 for their first home meets of the 2007 season. Both meets are set to begin at 2 p.m.
