Men's Tennis Opens Dual Season Versus North Florida on Sunday

Jan. 19, 2007

CORAL GABLES, Fla. – The No. 11 University of Miami men’s tennis team will open its dual season at home in the Neil Schiff Tennis Center versus North Florida on Sunday, January 21, at 3 p.m.

The Hurricanes return to competition at home after senior Luigi D’Agord claimed the UM Spring Invitational Tournament championship with a perfect 3-0 record in the top-flight singles position last weekend.

Third-year head coach Mario Rincon, the 2006 ACC Coach of the Year, will guide a talented Hurricanes squad that features D’Agord and fellow All-American sophomore Daniel Vallverdu, the 2006 ACC Freshman of the Year, as well as returning letterwinners Josh Cohen and Vivek Subramanian. The Hurricanes come off a successful 2006 season, including a 20-5 overall record and a share of the ACC regular season title with a 9-2 conference mark, culminating with the program’s 41st appearance in the NCAA Tournament.

The upstart North Florida men’s tennis program, entering just its second season in NCAA Division I, returns six players – including three of its top four singles players – from its 2006 team that finished 15-7 overall and undefeated in Atlantic Sun Conference play.

Following Sunday’s match versus North Florida, the Hurricanes return to competition at home versus Stetson on Wednesday, January 24, at 3 p.m. Admission to all regular-season matches at the Neil Schiff Tennis Center is free.
