CORAL GABLES, Fla. – Seniors Luigi D’Agord and Josh Cohen along with sophomore Daniel Vallverdu each claimed victories in their respective flight on the second day of play Sunday at the UM Spring Invitational at the Neil Schiff Tennis Center.
D’Agord, who knocked off 44th-ranked Matko Maravic of Michigan Saturday, defeated 96th-ranked Milan Mihailovic of Texas in straight sets, 6-3, 6-3 Sunday to improve to 2-0 at the tournament.
Cohen, playing in the second flight, defeated Texas’ Dimitar Kutrovsky 6-3, 6-2 while Vallverdu overtook the Longhorns’ Miguel Reyes Varela, 6-4, 6-2.
In doubles play, D’Agord and Cohen teamed up to upset the nation’s fourth-ranked doubles tandem in Joey Atas and David Goulet of Duke, 8-0.
Vallverdu and teammate, freshman Hector Neito defeated Duke’s Dylan Arnould and Peter Rodrigues, 8-4, and UM freshmen Barnabas Carrega and J.C. Whitner knocked off Duke’s Alex Stone and Aaron Carpenter, 8-2.
“Our doubles took a big jump forward today,” said UM assistant coach C.J. Weber. “Luigi and Josh were a lot of fun to watch in their victory. J.C. and Barni (Carrega) played with unsurpassed energy that they need to try and recreate all throughout this season.”
The third and final day of play at the UM Spring Invitational will conclude Monday at the Neil Schiff Tennis Center. Admission is free.
