Swimming and Diving Wrap-up First and Second Day of the Nike Cup Invitational

Chapel Hill, N.C. – The University of Miami women’s and men’s swimming and diving teams completed their first two days of preliminaries and finals of the Nike Cup Invitational at the Koury Natatorium on the campus of the University of North Carolina.

The Hurricanes opened Thursday evening’s finals competition finishing ninth in the 200 yard freestyle relay. Miami’s relay team of Kristen Pomerleau, Tina Mcintyre, Nancy Gajos, and Kelly Peloquin turned in a time of 1:36.98.

Freshman Katie Eason advanced to the finals of the 200 yard IM, finishing 2:08.02 for eleventh place out of 52 swimmers, after clocking in at 2:06.50 for twelfth place in Thursday morning’s preliminaries.

In the 50 yard freestyle event, Kristen Pomerleau clocked in ninth with a time of 23.76. The sophomore finished with a time of 23.51 earlier in the preliminaries.

The women’s one meter diving event saw a true domination by the Hurricanes, as sophomore Jenna Dreyer placed first in the preliminaries and finals. Dryer scored a 305.75 in the finals after she finished with a 289.55 score in the preliminaries.

Senior Heather Bounds finished with a fourth place score of 256.55 in the finals. Bounds also came in fourth place in the preliminaries scoring 257.60.

Over in the men’s one meter diving, freshman Ruben Ross placed fourth with a 334.15 score in the finals. The rookie took third place in the preliminaries with a score of 326.20.

In the 400 medley relay, the Hurricanes captured a ninth place finish with a time of 3:50.86 in the finals. The swimmers consisted of Ashley Knapp, Magda Waskiewicz, Katie Eason, and Kristen Pomerleau. Also participating in this competition was Tina Mcintyre, Christina Rau, Nancy Gajos, and Kelly Peloquin, finishing with a time of 3:59.40.

All-in-all, Miami finished sixth out of eight total schools, with a score of 87 in the women’s rankings In the men’s rankings, the Hurricanes placed ninth out of ten schools.

Day two of the Nike Cup Invitational saw the Hurricanes competing in the finals of the 200 yard medley relay, 400 yard IM, the 100 yard breaststroke, 100, yard backstroke, and the 800 yard freestyle relay.

Miami finished in the eighth place with swimmers Ashley Knapp, Magda Waskiewicz, Nancy Gajos, and Kristen Pomerleau with a time of 1:46.58 in the 200 yard medley relay. In 16th place, Tina McIntyre, Christina Rau, Victoria Zubowicz, and Kelly Peloquin clocked in at 1:48.48

Freshman Katie Eason chimed in a time of 4:33.56 in the 400 yard IM for 11th place.

In the 100 yard breaststroke, Kelly Peloquin captured fifth place finishing with a time of 1:04.42. Following two spots behind, sophomore Magda Waskiewicz finished with a time of 1:04.51.

Senior Ashley Knapp finished with a tenth place win clocking in at 58.24.

Miami swimmers Emerson Davis, Kristen Pomerleau, Capria DeVenuto, and Kelly Peloquin clocked in a time of 7:44.42, placing 14th in the 800 yard freestyle relay.

UM finished in the sixth spot for the second day of finals, with a score of 151.

The Nike Cup Invitational will resume with prelims on Saturday beginning at 10:00 a.m. with finals starting at 6:00 p.m.
