Hurricanes Wrapped Up Their Play at the ITA South Regional Championships

TUSCALOOSA, Ala. – The University of Miami women’s tennis team wrapped up their weekend at the 2006 ITA South Regional Championships, hosted on the campus of the University of Alabama.
The first day of A singles saw four Miami matches in round of 64 by Gina Sabatino, Caren Seenauth, Romy Farah and, Laura Vallverdu. Sabatino suffered a loss to Lauren MacFarlane of Florida State 6-1, 6-1. Romy Farah played a match against Alison Silverio of Georgia Tech in the bottom half of the round of 64, and was defeated 6-3, 6-1.
Both Seenauth and Vallverdu advanced to round of 32 in singles play that Thursday morning of the tournament. Seenauth defeated Martina Banikova of Mississippi State University, 6-0, 7-6 (6) in singles 1-32, while Vallverdu won her match against Valentina Galbarina of Stetson University, 6-1, 6-2 in singles 33-64.
Friday morning in the round of 32 of A singles, Seenauth loss 4-6, 6-1, 6-2 to Megan Alexander of the University of Florida. Vallverdu was also defeated, as she went up against Ania Rynarzewska of Florida State, 6-3, 1-6, 7-6 (5).
Sabatino and Farah both played in a back-draw in the A singles consolation and advanced to the quarterfinals. Sabatino faced Anna Yankimchenkova from the University of Central Florida and moved on the second round after defeating her 6-2, 6-1. The second round saw match where Sabatino won against Whitney Chappell of Auburn, 6-0, 6-2. In the quarterfinals, Sabatino could not come out with a victory, for she loss to Lolita Franguylan of the University of Florida, 6-7, 6-3. Farah made it through to the quarterfinals after capping off wins against Renee Joseph of Mississippi State University, 6-4, 6-3, and Naoko Ueshima of Georgia 3-2, 2-6, 6-4. In the quarterfinal round, Farah came up short, as she loss to Csillia Borsanyi 6-1, 6-1.
In women’s A doubles, Sabatino and Seenauth advanced to round of 16 as they defeated Catalina Castillo and Florencia Torres of University of North Florida, 8-4. The next day, the Hurricane duo played a set against Monika Dancevic and Darya Ivanov of Georgia, but went down 8-3.
Gina Sabatino and Romy Farah could not pull off a win, as they loss 8-6 to Breanna Atkinson and Valentina Galbarina of Stetson University in round of 32 of women’s A doubles.
In women’s B singles, Emily Mowrey represented Miami in round of 64, but automatically advanced to round of 32 after a bye was posted. She defeated Natalie Gorham of Stetson University 6-1, 7-5. In her final singles match of the tournament, round of 16, Mowrey suffered a loss against Suzi Mansour of Florida State, 6-4, 7-5.
Women’s tennis will participate in the ITA National Indoors, Columbus, OH and the Palm Springs Invite in Palm Springs, Calif., Nov.3-5.
