Hurricanes Defeat Former Players in Alumni Match

CORAL GABLES, FLa. (www.hurricansports.com) – The University of Miami women’s volleyball team suited up for an exhibition match against seven former Hurricane volleyball players in their second annual Alumni Match Friday evening at the Knight Sports Complex.
The Hurricanes took down the former players 30-14, 30-20, 30-13, in a best out of five match.
“I was very pleased with the way we played tonight,” said head coach Nicole Lantagne Welch. “Our passing was much improved, which is something we have been working a lot on.”
As a team, Miami posted a hitting percentage of .367. Senior Francheska Savage led the team with 14 kills and seven digs, while Ciara Michel contributed seven kills and two solo blocks. Sophomore Setter Bridget Bomhack registered a personal high 35 assists.
“Ciara Michel did a great job blocking for us tonight, and Bridget Bomack did a nice job setting.”
The alumni included Jamie Grass, Elizabeth (Biz) Tyson, Marcela Gamerra, Kristin (Kristi) Sprinkel, Carrie Frash, Karla Johnson, and Mallory James.
They were led by Marcela Gamarra, a former outside hitter for the Hurricanes, who posted seven kills and two digs. Elizabeth (Biz) Tyson also contributed with six kills and four digs.
“It was great to have our alumni back,” concluded Lantagne Welch. “It is always a special time to see everybody.”
Miami will welcome Florida A&M, Jacksonville, and Loyola Marymount as they play tournament host next weekend for the Hurricane Invitational. The Tournament will take place at the Knight Sports Complex Sept.15-16. The Hurricanes will take on Florida A&M at 7 p.m. on Friday, and face a double-header against Jacksonville at 12:30 p.m., and Loyola Marymount on Saturday at 7:30 p.m.
