Aug. 18, 2006
CORAL GABLES, Fla. – Head coach Mario Rincon along with the University of Miami has announced the hiring of C.J. Weber as an assistant coach with the UM men’s tennis program.
Weber comes to Miami following a one-year stint as a volunteer assistant coach at the University of Illinois. Prior to his stop at Illinois, he spent two seasons as the assistant men’s and women’s tennis coach at Eastern Illinois University.
“It feels great,” said Weber of his appointment to UM. “Having to opportunity to come to a place such as Miami, an ACC school with such a prestigious history, along with being able to coach alongside Mario Rincon, who has done such an outstand job at UM, is definitely exciting. I’m looking forward to working hard to push this program in the right direction.”
Last season, Weber was part of an Illini coaching staff that helped guide Illinois to a Sweet 16 appearance at the 2006 NCAA Championship Tournament and a final No. 9 Intercollegiate Tennis Association Ranking.
“We are extremely thrilled to have C.J., who I feel is one of the most promising up-and-coming young coaches in the country,” said Rincon.
A four-year letterwinner at EIU, Weber was a three-time All-Ohio Valley Conference selection and was named the 2004 OVC Player of the Year. In addition, he was named the EIU Male Athlete of the Year in 2004 as well as earning Academic All-American honors that same year.
Weber earned a bachelor of arts in psychology from EIU in 2004 before going on to earn a masters in athletic administration in 2005.
Weber replaces former assistant coach Jason Cook who left UM following the 2005-06 season.
