May 27, 2006
PALO ALTO, Calif. – Miami junior Luigi D’Agord and freshman Daniel Vallverdu earned a berth into the Quarterfinals of the 2006 Men’s Tennis Doubles Championships by knocking off Rice’s Konstain Haerle and Robert Searle 7-6 (4), 7-6 (3) Friday night in the Round of 16 at Taube Stadium on the campus of Standford University.
The duo moves on to the Quarterfinal Round where they face second-seeded Andre Begemann and Scott Doemer of recently crowned NCAA Champion Pepperdine Saturday at 12 noon PST.
D’Agord’s victory in doubles came hours after he bowed out of the singles tournament in an upset by Clemson’s 30th-ranked Clement Reix. D’Agord, the 2006 Men’s Tennis Singles Championships’ overall No. 3 seed, fell in straight sets (6-2, 6-4) to Reix, snapping his 21-match win streak and ending his impressive season at UM.
The 2006 ACC Player of the Year closes out the season with an overall record of 36-5 which ties for the second-highest single season win total in UM history.
