Hurricanes Hold Off Wake Forest to Advance to ACC Tournament Semifinals

CARY, N.C. – Senior Eric Hechtman claimed a three-set victory at No. 4 singles to clinch third seeded Miami’s 4-3 win over sixth seeded Wake Forest (15-9, 6-5 ACC) to advance to the semifinals of the Atlantic Coast Conference Championship Friday afternoon at the Cary Tennis Center. <?xml:namespace prefix=”st1″ ns=”urn:schemas-microsoft-com:office:smarttags”?>Miami (18-5, 9-2 ACC) advances to play second seeded Virginia (20-7, 9-2 ACC) Saturday, April 22 at noon. <?xml:namespace prefix=”o” ns=”urn:schemas-microsoft-com:office:office”?>

 

Wake Forest took a 1-0 match lead heading into singles play after claiming the doubles point with wins at No. 2 and No. 3 doubles. The Demon Deacon’s Todd Paul/Cory Parr pair topped the Hurricanes’ Vivek Subramanian/Tim Krebs tandem, 8-4, at the No. 2 slot before Andrew Hamar and Marius Adamski defeated Josh Cohen and Hechtman, 8-5, at the No. 3 slot.

 

97th ranked Cohen put Miami on the board with a 6-1, 6-1 victory over Parr at the No. 3 slot before Daniel Vallaverdu, ranked 101st, topped Hamar 6-4, 6-3 at the No. 3 position to give Miami a 2-1 lead.

 

Fourth ranked Luigi D’Agord then gave Miami a 3-1 lead by outlasting 17th ranked Paul 6-2, 5-7, 6-3 at the No. 1 slot.

 

The Demon Deacons knotted the score at 3-all with wins a both the No. 4 and No. 6 positions. WakeForest’s Brett Ross handed Tim Krebs a 3-6, 6-4, 6-2 loss at the No. 4 position before John Hoyes dropped a 6-4, 7-6 (3) decision to Liron Strauss at the No. 6 slot.

 

With the match on the line, all eyes turned to court No. 5 where Hechtman and Adamski were engaged in a three set battle. Hechtman won the first set 6-3 before Adamski won the second set by the same margin to force a third and deciding set. With the set tied at 4-all, Hechtman won the final two games to win the match 6-3, 3-6, 6-4 and clinch Miami’s first quarterfinal victory in its two years in the league.
